Wrote that Review Update #382, November 28th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
If you want to participate, set a certain amount of reviews to write, and once you make that goal, you can get a reward!

My reviews to reward is writing all of the reviews of the week, and I motivated myself to write my review for Angelfall, A Resolution at Midnight and A Secret Never Told, We Set the Dark on Fire and We Unleash the Merciful Storm, Fated Blades, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, Ashes of Gold, so I have 6 of 6 reviews written!

And as always, I want to review this week's reviews!

What about you guys? Happy reading!

How Well I Stuck to It #384, November 28th

So I decided that I should have accountability on sticking to what should be in a week, so I'm doing How Well I Stuck to It every Sunday, because my schedule should be fixed in by now!

Week 48:
Nothing Planned!

A free week, to read whatever I want, and I can't wait!

Week 47:
These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan, These Twisted Bonds by Lexi Ryan, An Unreliable Magic by Rin Chupeco

vs.

Angelfall by Susan Ee, A Resolution at Midnight by Shelley Nobel, A Secret Never Told by Shelley Noble, We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia, We Unleash the Merciful Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia, Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White,
Ashes of Gold by J. Elle

I did read These Hollow Vows yesterday, and I'm reading These Twisted Bones, and I hope to read An Unreliable Magic, but I didn't read them in the week of week 47 reviews. Opps. But I did read some really excellent books that I really enjoyed! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wheel of TBR #79, November 28th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read A Secret Never Told by Shelley Noble, We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White, and I started These Twisted Bonds by Lexi Ryan.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this current month, I chose ARC. I read We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia, Ashes of Gold by J. Elle, These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan, so I've read 12/9+.

For this coming month, I chose Yearly Goals. So I'm going to be reading Rachel Caine books, and ARC's!

Prompts Used This Week:
A-Z End Author, Continue the Series, Wild Card.

A-Z End Author-Red-K-Aurora's End by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman, because it's by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman, which is doubly perfect!

Continue the Series-Orange-Return to Aurora by Jamie Littler-This is book 2 in the series, so that works!

Wild Card-Chartreuse-Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend-Poor Little Dead Girls by Lizzie Friend-I know basically know nothing about this book, so that works! And now at the end of the week, I have to switch these out!

Colour Totals:
Red: 1
Orange: 1
Yellow: 0
Chartreuse: 1
Green: 0
Spring Green: 0
Cyan: 0
Azure: 0
Blue: 0
Violet: 0
Magenta: 0
Rose: 0

Prompts for Next Week:
Short Book-Red
Series Number-Orange
Year As Last Read-Yellow
Audiobook-Chartreuse
Genre-Green
Series Continued and Unfinished/Current 2021-Spring Green
Read a Book in One Sitting-Cyan
A-Z Reading Challenge-Azure
More Than 1000 Reviews-Blue
Word-Violet
Reread-Magenta
Title-Rose

So those are some of the books I'm going to try to read this week. What about you guys? Happy reading!

The Reward Challenge Update #532, November 28th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read Angelfall which counts 4 times as a 2021 Dystopia Book, NetGalley Book and Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book, A Resolution at Midnight which counts 4 times as a Historical Fiction 2021 Book, NetGalley Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book, A Secret Never Told which counts 5 times as a Historical Fiction 2021 Book, NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a WoW Book, We Set the Dark on Fire which counts 5 times as a DAC Book, Edelweiss Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a WTC Book, We Unleash the Merciless Storm which counts 5 times as a Edelweiss Book, End of Series 2021 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a Sophomore Challenge Book, Fated Blades which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a WoW Book, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein which counts 5 times as a 2021 Retelling Reading Challenge Book, Historical Fiction 2021 Book, SAC 2021 Book and a WoW Book, Ashes of Gold which counts 5 times as a End of Series 2021 Book, NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a WoW Book, Ashes of Gold which counts 5 times as a End of Series 2021 Book, NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2021 Book and a WoW Book.

So I have 41 counts which translates to $20.50 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

Week 47 Review: Ashes of Gold

From Goodreads:
In the heart-pounding conclusion to the Wings of Ebony duology, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicole Yoon calls "bold, inventive, big-hearted and deeply perceptive," Rue makes her final stand to reclaim her people's stolen magic.

Rue has no memory of how she ended up locked in a basement prison without her magic or her allies. But she's a girl from the East Row. And girls from the East Row don't give up. Girls from the East Row pick themselves back up when they fall. Girls from the East Row break themselves out.

But reuniting with her friends is only half the battle. When she finds them again, Rue makes a vow: she will find a way to return the magic that the Chancellor has stolen from her father's people. Yet even on Yiyo Peak, Rue is a misfit—with half a foot back in Houston and half a heart that is human as well as god, she's not sure she's the right person to lead the fight to reclaim a glorious past.

When a betrayal sends her into a tailspin, Rue must decide who to trust and how to be the leader that her people deserve…because if she doesn't, it isn't just Yiyo that will be destroyed—it will be Rue herself.

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book! I loved the first one, loved the world and these characters, and I was so excited to be back in it! I love this story of rebellion, of standing up to oppressors, and of Rue, who has found her power along the way-now just has to find how she's going to use it!

I do have to say, I was a bit confused at the beginning. It seemed like the ending of the first book, that they had the Chancellor on the run. So I was a little confused going from the ending of Wings of Ebony to the beginning of this book.

I really couldn't this book down, it was so compelling, and I just had to know what was going to happen next, just like the first book! This whole world has been so unfair to Rue and her fathers people, and I just wanted them to get the justice that they deserved!

There was also a love triangle, which really sucked for Rue, because both Julius or Jhamal were good guys, and they both were connected to a part of her. It was great that she had something good in her life while everything else was going wrong! Loved how it worked out!

This was a fantastic read, and I loved reading it!

Week 47 Review: The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

From Goodreads:
Elizabeth Lavenza hasn't had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with bruises from her "caregiver," and she is on the verge of being thrown into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein, an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything--except a friend.

Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does everything she can to make herself indispensable--and it works. She is taken in by the Frankenstein family and rewarded with a warm bed, delicious food, and dresses of the finest silk. Soon she and Victor are inseparable.

But her new life comes at a price. As the years pass, Elizabeth's survival depends on managing Victor's dangerous temper and entertaining his every whim, no matter how depraved. Behind her blue eyes and sweet smile lies the calculating heart of a girl determined to stay alive no matter the cost . . . as the world she knows is consumed by darkness.

My Review:
This book was so excellent  and so easy to read, and of course very dark! I've never read the original because I'm not one for classics, but it's spawned some pretty amazing retellings, and this one just joined the group for me! I loved reading it!

I loved the different parts of this book, of going to Victor's college town, to being back home, to the part where the truth is revealed, and action is taken! It was such a wild ride, but it made sense with each and every step!

I felt so badly for Elizbeth. She was in a horrible position, to be attached to this family, but not a part of it, with no money, no prospects, and dependent on being needed in Victor's life to continue as she is. But oh, if she only knew!

Things just keep getting worse and worse for her, she keeps having to cover for Victor-and he's doing some pretty awful things. But when she found out of all that he'd done, I loved how she took action, and how that ending went was just thrilling to read and it worked out very well, given the circumstances!

This was a fantastic read, and I love that it exists!

Week 47 Review: Fated Blades

From Goodreads:
An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power―and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology. Expecting to suffer through their uneasy alliance, Ramona and Matias instead discover that they understand each other as no one in their families can―and that their combined skills may eclipse the risks of their forbidden alliance.

As the two warriors risk their lives to save their families, they must decide whether to resist or embrace the passion simmering between them. For now, the dance between their families continues―but just one misstep could spell the end of them both.

My Review:
I of course loved reading this book! I love their writing so much, and this world of the Kinsmen is so interesting, though we so far have only visited it in chunks! I loved getting to know Matias and Ramona, and their dealings, given that they're in opposing families!

One thing that I didn't know about this series was that it was their take on various romance tropes, from arranged marriage, the meek assistant, to now soul mates, and I didn't know that, and I love that about this series!

The feud between Matias and Ramona's families has been on-going for many generations, but for them, hasn't erupted in a while. But when their spouses work together to steal from both families competing projects, Matias and Ramona have to work together, and I loved seeing them work out their differences!

But that epilogue? That was just utterly hilarious, I loved how they sprung their marriage on them, that was just epic and wonderful plotting on their part! I'm just glad that they've healed the rift between them, what a power they'll be, working together!

This was a fantastic read, and I can't wait for more from this series!

Week 47 Reviews: We Set the Dark on Fire, We Unleash the Merciless Storm

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband's household or raise his children, but both are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school's top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret—that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico's son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.

On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or to give up everything she's strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?

From Goodreads:
In this nail-biting sequel to Tehlor Kay Mejia's critically acclaimed fantasy novel We Set the Dark on Fire, La Voz operative Carmen is forced to choose between the girl she loves and the success of the rebellion she's devoted her life to.

Being a part of the resistance group La Voz is an act of devotion and desperation. On the other side of Medio's border wall, the oppressed class fights for freedom and liberty, sacrificing what little they have to become defenders of the cause.

Carmen Santos is one of La Voz's best soldiers, taken in when she was an orphaned child and trained to be a cunning spy. She spent years undercover at the Medio School for Girls, but now, with her identity exposed and the island on the brink of civil war, Carmen returns to the only real home she's ever known: La Voz's headquarters. There she must reckon with her beloved leader, who is under the influence of an aggressive new recruit, and with the devastating news that her true love might be the target of an assassination plot. Will Carmen break with her community and save the girl who stole her heart—or fully embrace the ruthless rebel she was always meant to be?

My Review:
Wow, I loved reading this series! I absolutely hated this world for these characters, it was just awful, the amount of privilege that the ones on top had, and how little those at the bottom did, it was such a horrible world to live in-but these characters, at least by the middle of the first book, are meaning to change that!

Getting to know Dani-and then Carmen, was so fantastic! I loved seeing things from Dani's perspective, of seeing these atrocities and acting on them, to Carmen, who is a member of La Voz, and has been working on revolution for most of her life. It was a great contrast!

I felt so badly for the both of them, married to this awful dude with power, who has never known what it is like to go without. Really, this whole culture with two wives, it's just greedy and selfish. Not to mention that the privileged don't understand what it's like to go without.

Both girls struggle, with previous loyalties, to their respective families, and to each other, and to La Voz. I loved watching them deal with their emotions-and deal with this rebellion, because it needs them, and I loved the role that they played, especially in that ending! Such a great read!

Loved reading these books, and I can't wait to see what Tehlor Kay Mejia writes next!
