From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ava Reid comes a reimagining of Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare's most famous villainess, giving her a voice, a past, and a power that transforms the story men have written for her.
The Lady knows the stories: how her eyes induce madness in men.
The Lady knows she will be wed to the Scottish brute, who does not leave his warrior ways behind when he comes to the marriage bed.
The Lady knows his hostile, suspicious court will be a game of strategy, requiring all of her wiles and hidden witchcraft to survive.
But the Lady does not know her husband has occult secrets of his own. She does not know that prophecy girds him like armor. She does not know that her magic is greater and more dangerous, and that it will threaten the order of the world.
She does not know this yet. But she will.
My Review:
I had a really fantastic time reading this story! While we did examine MacBeth in high school, that was over a decade now, which is strange to say, but yeah, my memory isn't great even for books I read last week, let alone years ago. So while I remember parts of the story, I was excited to see Ava Reid's take on it.
Like, I had no idea when the play was set, but the time in this book, where I think where the Lady was from is mediaeval France, and there were all sorts of languages, and thus, names, yeah, that was really interesting to read and I'm glad that Ava Reid made that choice in the text!
Because of her beauty, her father made up this story that she was cursed by a witch, and that for a guy to look into her eyes, he would be under her spell. Which was an interesting idea, and I loved how it played into this story, of if there was magic or not!
We know that Macbeth isn't the greatest of guys, he wants power, and he's willing to kill to achieve his goals. I loved seeing this story from her perspective, because ladies didn't have much power, only what the guys in charge of them gave them. But she really kept her own power, her own agency, and I loved how that worked out for her in the end!
Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Ava Reid!
