Explosive and enthralling romantasy debut from New York Times bestselling author Rachel Howzell Hall...
Thrown into a desolate land of sickness and unnatural beasts, Kai wakes in the woods with no idea who she is or how she got there. All she knows is that if she cannot reach the Sea of Devour, even this hellscape will get worse. But when she sees the village blacksmith fight invaders with unspeakable skill, she decides to accept his offer of help.
Too bad he's as skilled at annoying her as he is at fighting.
As she searches for answers, Kai only finds more questions, especially regarding the blacksmith who can ignite her body like a flame, then douse it with ice in the next breath.
And no one is what—or who—they appear to be in the kingdom of Vinevridth, including the man whose secrets might be as deadly as the land itself.
My Review:
This was an incredible read! I loved the world, and getting to know these characters, and oh, it was so vibrant, and I quickly was obsessed with this story, and I had to know what was going to happen next! As events happened, as she learned more, and started to recover her memories, yeah, it was so good!
Kai is pretty angry right at the start of the book-she wakes up, and someone is stealing from her. Sure, they thought she was dead, but not cool. And then that person is trying to sell her stuff. So of course she's going to respond, though maybe that method was a bit over the top.
I don't know if I would've have noticed this or not if I hadn't listened to this on audio, but the amount of times that Kai would fight with Jadon, usually because of a secret he was keeping from her, and then forgive him, and then almost hook up, but then get interrupted? That sequence of events should happen once, but it happened multiple times throughout the book, sometimes with other things inbetween, but of these events, in this order. So that was a bit repetitive.
That end battle, yeah, that was pretty explosive! After all that she'd been through, what she fought, who and what was lost, and that that she learned, it's itching to become a series. I'm not sure if I fully understand what was going on, but yeah, there needs to be a sequel to deal with everything that happened!
Loved reading this book, and this better become a series, because the way things ended, well, it can't end there! (Since this review was posted, and when I'm writing this review, it has become a series, but I'm not going to alter the information in this review post besides adding this note.)
