Week 44 Reviews: The Case of Jamie, A Question of Holmes

From Goodreads:
The hotly anticipated and explosive third book in the New York Times bestselling Charlotte Holmes series.

It's been a year since the shocking death of August Moriarty, and Jamie and Charlotte haven't spoken.

Jamie is going through the motions at Sherringford, trying to finish his senior year without incident, with a nice girlfriend he can't seem to fall for.

Charlotte is on the run, from Lucien Moriarty and from her own mistakes. No one has seen her since that fateful night on the lawn in Sussex—and Charlotte wants it that way. She knows she isn't safe to be around. She knows her Watson can't forgive her.

Holmes and Watson may not be looking to reconcile, but when strange things start happening, it's clear that someone wants the team back together. Someone who has been quietly observing them both. Making plans. Biding their time.

Someone who wants to see one of them suffer and the other one dead.

From Goodreads:
In the explosive conclusion to the  New York Times bestselling Charlotte Holmes series, Holmes and Watson think they're finally in the clear after graduating from Sherringford…but danger awaits in the hallowed halls of Oxford.

Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson finally have a chance to start over. With all the freedom their pre-college summer program provides and no one on their tail, the only mystery they need to solve, once and for all, is what they are to each other.

But upon their arrival at Oxford, Charlotte is immediately drawn into a new a series of accidents befell the theater program at Oxford last year, culminating in a young woman going missing on the night of a major performance. The mystery has gone unsolved; the case is cold. And no one—least of all the girl's peculiar, close-knit group of friends—is talking. When Watson and Holmes join the theater program, the "accidents" start anew, giving them no choice but to throw themselves into the case. But as the complicated lines of friendship, love, and loyalty blur, time is running out—and tragedy waits in the wings.

My Review:
These were just so fantastic reads! I really enjoy this series and her writing, and I was really excited to see what this second half of the series would bring, after the events of the first half. And boy, was it a heck of a story!

After the way The Last of August ended, I had to know what was going to happen afterwards. That Jamie is having strange things happening to him, that someone is trying to get at Charlotte by getting at him, yeah, that was a complication. I really enjoyed how they were brought together, to really talk about it.

I'm glad that this is a 4 book series. The way The Case for Jamie ended was great, but not as satisfying as a series ender could be. And A Question of Holmes gave us more time with these characters, dealing with a new adventure, and I loved it!

The last case of the goings on at this theatre previously, and starting back up when our duo joins it, yeah, it was interesting, since it's the first case that isn't personal. But it was, as always, really well done, and such a blast to read!

Loved reading these books and I can't wait to read more by Brittany Cavallaro!

Week 44 Reviews: Three to Get Deadly, Four to Score

A "saintly" old candy store owner is on the lam - and bounty hunter extraordinaire Stephanie Plum is on the case. As the body count rises, Stephanie finds herself dealing with dead drug dealers and slippery fugitives on the chase of her life. And with the help of eccentric friends and family, Steph must see to it that this case doesn't end up being her last....

From Goodreads:
Stephanie Plum, Trenton, New Jersey's favorite pistol-packing, condom-carrying bounty hunter, is back - and on the trail of a revenge-seeking waitress who's skipped bail. With the help of 73-year-old Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker Lula, a transvestite musician named Sally Sweet, and the all-too-hospitable, all-too-sexy Joe Morelli, Stephanie might just catch her woman. Then again, with more mishaps than there are exits on the Jersey Turnpike - including murders, firebombs, and Stephanie's arch-rival bounty hunter chasing after the same fugitive - Stephanie better watch her back big-time if she wants to live to crack this case.

My first review of Three to Get Deadly, Four to Score
My Review:
It was an absolute delight to read these books again! I love this series so much, watching Stephanie deal with these bounties and dealing with her personal life at the same time is so much fun! She really is chaos incarnate, and so entertaining to read about!

Stephanie is always a hoot to read about, but this series wouldn't be what it is with all the other cast members, Morelli and Ranger, Grandma Mazur, and Lula. They really feel like real people, flawed and endless entertaining!

Plus her romantic life, both guys are pretty great, but since these were written over 2 decades ago, I doubt poly or why-choose was an option, though they are currently publishing, so that'd be interesting, to see if they would go for that...

The bounties, and mysteries, of these books are really interesting to read! Some people are really smart, some are not so bright, and some are just lucky, and get Stephanie and co. into some pretty hilarious situations, that I can't get enough of!

Loved reading these books and I can't wait to continue on with this series!

Week 44 Review: The Voice Upstairs

From Goodreads:
In 1920s England, a working-class girl who can see spirits works with a lord's son to solve mysterious deaths at the local manor home in this eerie historical mystery perfect for fans of The Haunting of Bly Manor and Downton Abbey.

Wilhelmina Price has a dubious reputation in the village of Thrush's Green. Ever since her mother's untimely death, she has been able to see a person's spirit leaving their body days or hours before they die. Wil has never been able to prevent these deaths, so her unusual skill has made her an outsider to most except her lifelong friend, Edison, the youngest son of Lord Summerfield. But when a maid at the Summerfield's estate dies in the same mysterious way as Wil's own mother, Wil takes on a housemaid's position to investigate whether these women might, in fact, have been murdered.

There is nothing Ed Summerfield values more than his friendship with Wil, which is why he's desperate to disguise how hopelessly in love with her he's become—and his belief that he may be haunted by the ghost of his older brother, Peter. Because if Wil, with her supernatural powers, can't see the same evidence of hauntings that Ed does, he worries he may actually be losing his mind.

Together, Wil and Ed must dig deeper into the Summerfields' hoard of secrets, though the truth won't give itself up without a fight that could prove deadly to the both of them, as they face cunning adversaries among the living and the dead.

My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I've read a few of her books, and I was excited to read this one, it sounded creepy and awesome! And oh, I had a great time reading it! I really enjoyed Wil's story, as she and Ed investigated what was going on!

The idea of being able to see that people are going to die, right before they do so, sounds pretty awful. That her mom died under suspicious conditions, well, that's hard. And while not great, having someone else die that way, gives an avenue to investigate what was going on.

Wil and Ed were just so cute! I loved that they were friends first, and had that foundation. Given that he's the lord's son, even the youngest and with little chance of inheriting, that's a bit of a power imbalance, so that they were friends first was really good.

The vibes were immaculate in this book, with a spooky atmosphere, with ghosts and possible madness. It definitely added to the tension as they investigated, and learned more, and I couldn't get enough! From beginning to end, I enjoyed this book!

Week 44 Reviews: Beast Behaving Badly, Big Bad Beast, Bear Meets Girl, Wolf With Benefits, Bite Me

From Goodreads:
Ten years after Blayne Thorpe first encountered Bo Novikov, she still can't get the smooth-talking shifter out of her head. Now he's shadowing her in New York-all seven-plus feet of him-determined to protect her from stalkers who want to use her in shifter dogfights. Even if he has to drag her off to an isolated Maine town where the only neighbors are other bears almost as crazy as he is...

Let sleeping dogs lie. Bo knows it's good advice, but he can't leave Blayne be. Blame it on her sweet sexiness -- or his hunch that there's more to this little wolfdog than meets the eye. Blayne has depths he hasn't yet begun to fathom -- much as he'd like to. She may insist Bo's nothing but a pain in her delectable behind, but polar bears have patience in spades. Soon she'll realize how good they can be together. And when she does, animal instinct tells him it'll be worth the wait...

Ric Van Holtz is more than he seems, nothing you expect - and everything you want...When it comes to following her instincts, former Marine Dee-Ann Smith never holds back. And this deadly member of a shifter protection group will do anything to prove one of her own kind is having hybrids captured for dogfights. Trouble is, her too-cute, rich-boy boss Ric Van Holtz is making it real hard for Dee to keep her heart safe. He's wanted the fiercely independent she-wolf from day one, but he never expected their teamwork to be so explosive. Now is his last chance to show Dee what she needs isn't some in-your-face Alpha male, but a wily, resourceful wolf who'll always have her back in a fight...and between the sheets.

He's big, burly, and way smarter than your average shapeshifting bear. He's also about to get trapped by own his game. . .

Lou Crushek is a reasonable, mellow, easygoing kind of guy. But once someone starts killing the scumbags he works so hard to bust, that really gets under his fur. Especially when that someone is a curvy she-tiger with a skill set that's turning Crush's lone-bear world upside down--and bringing his passion out of hibernation. . .

As a member of an elite feline protection unit, Marcella Malone has no problem body-dropping anyone who hunts her kind. But Crush is proving one major pain in her gorgeous tail. The only reason she's joined forces with him is to track down the wealthy human who's got her entire species in his ruthless sights. It sure isn't because Crush's stubborn and contrary attitude is rubbing Cella in all the right ways. . .

Ricky Lee has no plans of getting serious about anyone, but he will protect Toni Jean-Louis Parker. Not just because he’s been hired to do so, but because it's the right thing to do. And if that means traveling around the country with one complicated She-jackal, dealing with chocolate-eating wild dogs, instigating trouble between his brothers, and having the most amazing sex he's ever had…well, who said his job didn't have perks?

Toni doesn't know how she keeps getting herself into these situations. But even she has to admit there's something about Ricky Lee Reed that she finds kind of interesting…and downright sexy. Now they just have to survive long enough to figure out if what they have is worth fighting for…

Livy Kowalski has no time for idiots. When you shapeshift into a honey badger, getting through life's irritants is a finely honed skill. Until she gets stuck housing her nutso cousin and dealing with her dad's untimely and unexplained demise.

That's where Vic Barinov comes in--or his house does. Vic can't step outside without coming back to find Livy devouring his honey stash and getting the TV remote sticky. It gets his animal instincts all riled up. But he'll have to woo her at high speed: all hell is breaking loose, and Livy is leading the charge. . .

My Review:
This second half of the series was just as fun to read as the first! And it's pretty hilarious, just how many situations Blayne gets herself into, and just how many people are her friends, she definitely brought a lot of chaos to the series, and I loved it!

For these books, Blayne (obviously) and Bo, and Ricky Lee and Toni, and Livy and Vic were my favourite couples. Blayne for the chaos like I said, and how much she upends Bo's very structured life. Toni because she's the only non-genius of her siblings, and dealing with them was so fun. And Livy, she's the first honey badger in the series (it's weird that most characters didn't really know about honey badgers until they met Livy) and I'm so excited for the future!

But I do have a soft spot for Dee and Marcella, because they initially have this really big rivalry, but they work together really well, to the point where they're pretty scary to everybody else, which is pretty funny to read!

There's a lot going on in these books besides the romance. There's a pretty big subplot running through about fighting pits of hybrids mainly, of who was acquiring said hybrids, and who was having them fight. Loved watching that all get dealt with!

Loved reading these books and I can't wait to continue on in the world!

Week 44 Review: The Chess Queen Enigma

From Goodreads:
And then she mouthed a word at me—an unmistakable word that told me everything I needed to know. "Checkmate."

Evaline Stoker & Mina Holmes have reluctantly agreed to act as social chaperones and undercover bodyguards for Princess Lurelia of Betrovia, who has arrived in London to deliver a letter that details the secret location of an ancient chess queen that's been missing for centuries. But when the letter—which will heal a centuries-old rift between England and the Betrovians—is stolen out from under Evaline and Mina's watchful eyes, the two girls are forced into a high-stakes race to ensure they find the chess queen before anyone else does…including their foe, the Ankh. For the chess queen is not only a historic symbol of a woman's political power, but it has literal power as well—the queen will unlock the chessboard, revealing both treasures and ancient secrets the Ankh would kill to possess. It will take Mina's smarts and Evaline's strength to beat the thief and untangle this mystery before it is too late.

My Review:
Reading this book was so great! I've really enjoyed continuing on with this series, spending more time with Evaline and Mina on these adventures, as they solve these mysteries, and face off against the Ankh. This latest read was such a blast to read!

We've now gotten a few stories with Evaline and Mina, and gotten to know them, and they've gotten to know each other, so while they still don't always like one another, they know how to work together, which is needed with this latest adventure.

Things quickly go wrong when the princess they need to guard to prevent diplomatic incidents between their two countries, is attacked basically right away. So dealing with that and the chess piece, and all the history and politics, was quite the problem.

I really enjoyed how things resolved, there's still things to deal with, but there's still 2 more books, and this was really satisfying! And those threads still needing to be tied up have me looking forward to continuing on with this series!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to continue on with the series!

Monthly ARC's Update 52

So I read my next book for Monthly ARC's and it was Good Girls Don't Die by Christina Henry and Loveboat Forever by Abigail Hing Wen from the November list.

Here's the link to this month's post with my journey.

How it Works:
This is my monthly ARC accountability challenge, to list out the books that I have as ARC's that are being published in the coming month, rounding them up at the start of the month, and seeing how well I did at the end, as well as rounding up the next month's books.

23 Books to Read in 2023 Update 9

So I read my next book for the 23 Books to Read in 2023 Challenge!

So I read The Chess Queen Enigma by Colleen Gleason from the Edelweiss list!

Yep. Happy reading!

Here's the link to this year's post with my journey.

But to recap, I wanted to do a version of These Books Will Self Destruct in 12 months without the self destruct. I wanted to read books that I've had for a while, that I really needed to get read, but maybe I forgot about them or that I had them. So I made 2 lists, one for each way I have them, as physical books, and as ARC's, half from NetGalley, and half from Edelweiss.

Monthly Series November Round Up

In 2023, I want to make a focus on continuing series. So each month, I'll either draw, or chose, a series that I was current on in a previous year, but has since been continued. A series that I started or continued, but didn't catch up with what was currently published. 2 series that I haven't touched since 2020. A series that I read from this year, but still need to continue. The goal is to finish out as many series as I can, and keep current on the series that are still ongoing.

So how did I do last month?
I read Grave Wars by Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe, Captive by Iris Johansen, One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus, One for the Money by by Janet Evanovich, A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro, One of Us is Back by Karen M. McManus, The Survivor by Iris Johansen, Two for the Dough by Janet Evanovich, The Last August by Brittany Cavallaro, Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich, Four to Score by Janet Evanovich, by Brittany Cavallaro, by Brittany Cavallaro. So I finished 2 series, and stayed current with 2 series, and made progress in 1, but that one has like, 30 books, so I'm happy with that!

This month I'm going to draw/I've chosen which series, and the ones that got chosen and I'm going to be reading this month are:
Current in a Previous Year:
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

Unfinished in a Previous Year:
Alveria Dragon's Akademy Universe by Ava Richardson

Untouched Since 2020:
Wilde Island Chronicles by Janet Lee Carey
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini

Series from This Year:
The Empyrean by Rebecca Yarros

Monthly ARC's December Round Up

This is my monthly ARC accountability challenge, to list out the books that I have as ARC's that are being published in the coming month, rounding them up at the start of the month, and seeing how well I did at the end, as well as rounding up the next month's books.

So how did I do last month?
I read 2 of 8 books. Which is pretty bad. But I was doing a roll as you go, so I was contained by the prompts, so I wasn't able to get them. So I'm glad that the beginning of November helped me read some of these ARC's!

So the ARC's that I have coming out in December are
NetGalley:
For the Last Time by Heidi Perks - December 5th, 2023
This Cursed Light by Emily Thiede - December 5th, 2023

Edelweiss:
None!

So just 2, which is good, even for an ARC reading month, I hope to read the both of them!

Book Blogger Hop #317, November 3rd

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer's permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Have you ever read a Western? If so, do you enjoy the genre? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

No, not really, it's not a genre that I'm interested in. What about you guys? Happy reading!

First Lines Friday #651, November 3rd

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

"'You do realize you’re going straight to detention,' I say to my lab partner Gavin Holt. He’s wearing a white button-down shirt adorned with his signature bow-tie—all the boys wear ties. It’s a requirement, though Gavin is the only guy on campus who insists on the bow variety. But this time he’s gone off the rails and paired it with plaid pajama pants. Strictly against dress code. Torrey-Wells Academy, named after its two founders, has a bit of a double standard when it comes to attire. Guys have to wear slacks and a tie to classes, chapel, and to the dining hall; girls can wear pretty much whatever they want as long as it covers the necessary parts. For example, I’m wearing sweatpants and a ratty TWA sweatshirt—my daily uniform—and am in no danger of violating the code. Apparently, when the school opened up to girls back in the seventies, the board found altering the academy handbook too much of a bother. Which is fine with me." -They're Watching You by Chelsea Ichaso

Oh man, that's kinda funny, because girls are usually the ones getting hit with the dress code! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

The seductive and action-packed follow-up to Alex Aster’s instant #1 New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, and internationally bestselling novel, Lightlark

Isla Crown has secured the love of two powerful rulers and broken the curses that plagued the six realms for centuries, but few know the true origins of her powers. Now, in the wake of a crushing betrayal, Isla finds herself hungry for distraction, preferring to frequent Lightlark’s seductive haunts instead of embracing her duties as the newly crowned leader of two separate realms. Worse, her fellow rulers haven’t ceded victory quietly, and there are others in Isla’s midst who don’t believe her ascent to power was earned. As certain death races toward Lightlark and secrets from the past begin to unravel, Isla must weigh her responsibility to her people against the whims of the most dangerous traitor of all: her heart.

Alex Aster’s intricate world expands after the riveting culmination of the Centennial games, delving more deeply into Isla’s memories of her past, as her future hurtles toward two possible fates.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
This book comes out next week, and I'm so excited to read it! So hopefully I can pick it up right away! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday #651, November 1st

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Cocktails & Chloroform by Kelley Armstrong
Expected Publication: December 1st, 2023
From Goodreads:
For modern-day detective Mallory Atkinson, being trapped in the body of Victorian housemaid means overcoming endless obstacles. Her current challenge is winning over the suspicious young parlormaid, Alice. Mallory’s plan starts with teaching the girl to make Molotov cocktails, which is a perfectly valid science experiment and not at all a desperate ploy to gain Alice’s attention. Before the lesson can begin, though, Alice receives a letter that has her slipping off in the night. Concerned for her safety—and naturally curious—Mallory follows. Mallory finds Alice at what seems like a simple dance hall, watching young men and women flirting and whirling in pretty dresses and dapper suit-coats. But nothing here is what is seems, and what starts as a simple surveillance exercise turns into a full-scale spy mission with Mallory’s boss, Dr. Duncan Gray, at her side. Before the evening is done, those Molotov cocktails are probably going to come in handy. Note this is not a full-length novel. It's a novella set after The Poisoner's Ring.

Starting off the month with a single book, but I love Kelley Armstrong's writing, and this series, and I'm so excited for this latest installment! What about you guys? Happy reading!

WWW Wednesday #655, November 1st

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
