First Lines Friday #691, August 9th

First Lines Friday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie of Precision Reviews. We encourage all of our fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

-Grab your current read(s)
-Share the first line(s)
-Include the title and author so that other FLF participants can add the book to their TBR Lists!

"The bow of the ship's tender grated across broken shale and frozen sand, making landfall on the rocky island of Spitzbergen. Those aboard had come to seek the counsel of the damned, for even dead men had tales still to tell. 'We shouldn't be here.' Poruchik Orlov warned, clutching a Russian Orthodox crucifix to his chest. Commandant Vasily Chichagov couldn't argue with his lieutenant, but that didn't change matters."-Arkangel by James Rollins

That's certainly set up an atmosphere! Must read more now! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Random Reads #664, August 8th

Random Reads is a monthly meme (that I'm going to do weekly) hosted by I'm Loving Books to read some books that have been on our TBR piles for a long time. Using Random.org, I got 2292 which turned out to be Dating You/Hating You by Christina Lauren! It's been on my TBR pile since December 12th, 2016, and I added it because I love their writing, and it sounded really good! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Third Sentence Thursday #678, August 8th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme which likes to watch fireworks especially while eating a cookie!
1) Take the book you are currently reading and open it to a random page. Share the third full sentence on that page. (If there isn't a third one – like at the end of a chapter or a blank page – you can share the third sentence of the book or just choose another random page.) Feel free to share more than one sentence, if you feel the need to do so.
2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)
3) Post a link to your sentence at Words I Write Crazy (This Blog)
4) Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentences!

"There is no reason on earth good enough for us to stay." -The Secret of the Three Fates by Jess Armstrong, page 12.

That doesn't sound good, because it sounds like there's good reasons to leave!

Will the Time Come #688, August 8th

Every Thursday I am going to list a book which I really want to read/keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books which have been on my shelf for awhile now but don't have to be, maybe you got it two weeks ago and really want to read it! Thanks to Jodie from Books for Company for this meme!

Outcast due to their ability to manipulate time, shunned by the mortal and immortal worlds alike, a Traveller’s life is anything but easy.

Peter Faa is a member of the Watch tracking down a murderer, and unfortunately, all clues seem to point toward his own estranged family of Travellers. Any of his cousins could be guilty, but which one? They’re all experts in the art of stealing time...

After surviving a lightning strike, Kiya Mortenson is determined to get just one thing in her life right. And if that means taking a job as nanny to five pugs on a campsite in the Oregon wilderness, then so be it. It doesn’t hurt that the job comes with some spectacular male eye candy, including her new boss’s gorgeous grandson. If only she didn’t keep having this strange sense of deja vu...

When Peter discovers his own family is stealing time from Kiya, all bets are off. While she may drive him crazy at times, it’s clear that it’s not just lightning that’s creating some serious sparks between them. And he’s not going to let secrets, lies, or a devious murderer keep Kiya from where she belongs: at his side.

Why the time hasn't come yet...
I've read a few of her books, but I haven't read from this series yet, so I haven't been reminded about this book's existence. But it sounded really good, and I can't wait to read it! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Waiting on Wednesday #691, August 7th

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating!

Passions in Death by J.D. Robb
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024
From Goodreads:
Homicide Detective Eve Dallas hunts a killer who turns a wedding party into a murder scene in the latest novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author, J.D. Robb.

On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, speed through the streets of Manhattan to the Down and Dirty club, where a joyful, boisterous pre-wedding girls’ night out has turned into a murder scene. One of the brides lies in a pool of blood, garroted in a private room where she was preparing a surprise for her fiancée—two scrimped and saved-for tickets to Hawaii.

Despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses are hard to come by. It all brings back some bad memories for Eve. In her uniform days, she’d suffered an assault in the very same room—but she’d been able to fight back and survive. She’d gotten justice. And now she needs to provide some for poor young Erin.

Eve knows that the level of violence and the apparent premeditation involved suggest a volatile mix of hidden, heated passion and ice-cold calculation. This is a crime that can be countered only by hard detective work and relentless dedication—and Eve will not stop until she finds the killer who destroyed this couple’s dreams before the honeymoon even began…

Shadows of Perl by J. Elle
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024
From Goodreads:
The dazzling romantic fantasy world of House of Marionne continues in this dark and deadly sequel full of forbidden magic, devastating lies, and broken hearts.

A must read for fans of Stephanie Garber, Leigh Bardugo, and Alex Aster.

Unleash the darkness. Claim your power.

Quell Marionne’s explosive final Rite of Induction to House Marionne sent shockwaves through the magical world, unearthing long buried secrets and her own deadly power. But she paid a steep price: her family and her love. Fleeing Chateau Soleil for House of Perl, for once Quell is celebrated instead of shunned. She has finally found somewhere to belong. But secrets lurk in every House, and Quell’s quest to find her mom threatens to lead her deeper into the shadows.

Assassin Jordan Wexton, second-in command of the Dragun brotherhood, must protect the source of all magic, the Sphere. Yet the biggest threat to the Sphere is Quell Marionne—the girl he loved, until she claimed the deadly, outlawed toushana. As the Sphere cracks and war brews among the Houses, can the only way to save the world be to kill his own heart?

Now, these two lovers-turned enemies must confront their competing ambitions and conflicting loyalties. Or die. The future of magic hangs on their decision.

The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024
From Goodreads:
Percy Jackson for adults meets The Hunger Games with a slow burn romance between a contestant and Hades himself.

Every hundred years, the gods toy with us mere mortals.
And we let them.

The gods of myth are alive and well.
Once every century, they select a new ruler in a cutthroat competition, pushing mortal players to the limit. But this year, Hades is done sitting on the sidelines. And he’s picking a champion no one expects—in this modern mythic romantasy, she’ll fight for her life…
for the god of Death.
Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024
From Goodreads:
The Cruel Prince meets Ninth House in this dangerously romantic dark academia fantasy, where a lost heiress must infiltrate an arcane society and live with the vampire she suspects killed her family and kidnapped her sister.

It began long before my time, but something has always hunted our family.

Orphaned heiress Kidan Adane grew up far from the elusive society of vampires she was born into, where human bloodlines gain power through vampire companionship. She is obsessively protective, mildly nihilistic, and willing to do anything to save her loved ones. When her sister, June, disappears, Kidan is convinced a vampire stole her—the same vampire bound to her family bloodline, the cruel yet captivating Susenyos Sagad.

To find June, Kidan must infiltrate the elite Uxlay University—where students study to inherit their family fortune and select vampire companions. Kidan must study an arcane philosophy, work with four enigmatic students, and survive living with Susenyos—even as he does everything to drive her away. It doesn’t matter that Susenyos’s wickedness speaks to Kidan's own violent nature and tempts her to surrender to a life of darkness. She must find her sister and kill Susenyos at all costs.

When a murder mirroring June’s disappearance shakes Uxlay, Kidan sinks further into the ruthless underworld of vampires, risking her very soul. There she discovers a centuries-old threat. And June could be at the center of it. To save her sister, Kidan must bring Uxlay to its knees and either break free from the horrors of her own actions or embrace the dark entanglements of love—and the blood it requires.

The Dagger and the Flame by Catherine Doyle
Expected Publication: September 3rd, 2024
From Goodreads:
In the dark underbelly of a beautiful city, two rival assassins are pitted against each other in a deadly game of revenge, where the most dangerous mistake of all is falling in love in this searing young adult fantasy.

In Fantome, a kingdom of cobbled streets, flickering lamplight, beautiful buildings, and secret catacombs, Shade-magic is a scarce and deadly commodity controlled by two enemy guilds: the Cloaks and the Daggers—the thieves and the assassins. On the night of her mother's murder, seventeen-year-old Seraphine runs for her life. Seeking sanctuary with the Cloaks, Sera’s heart is set on revenge. But are her secret abilities a match for the dark-haired boy whose quicksilver eyes follow her around the city?

Nothing can prepare Sera for the moment she finally comes face-to-face with Ransom, heir to the Order of Daggers. And Ransom is shocked to discover that this unassuming farm girl wields a strange and blazing magic he has never seen before. As the Cloaks and the Daggers grapple for control of Fantome’s underworld, Sera and Ransom are consumed by the push and pull of their magic…and the deadly spark and terrible vengeance that keeps drawing them back together.

  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today's teaser comes from Wordless by AdriAnne Strickland, page 16.

"Drey made good on his word, coming to the garage even earlier than usual to tip me out of my cot and shove a cup of coffee into my hands. It looked and smelled like he'd brewed it out of old truck tires.."

Sounds good, and the coffee doesn't sound good, especially as someone who can't even stand the smell let alone drink it. What about you guys? Happy reading!

Update 4

Random:

OK, so I got 39 posts in 7 days, and it was a pretty good week, I have today off which is nice. Read some really fantastic books and looking forward to this week's releases as well! What about you guys? Happy reading!

So this week I want to read Arkangel.

From the #1 New York Times master of international thrillers comes the story of a global hunt across the top of world, pitting nation against nation, as ancient myths of a lost continent prove all too real. The execution of a Vatican archivist within the shadow of the Kremlin exposes a conspiracy going back three centuries—to the bloody era of the Russian Tsars.

Before his murder, he manages to dispatch a coded message, a warning of a terrifying threat, one tied to a secret buried within the Golden Library of Tsars, a vast and treasured archive that had vanished into history. As combative forces race for the truth behind this death and alarming discovery, Sigma Force is summoned to aid in the search—not only for this missing trove of ancient books, but to follow a trail far into the Arctic, to search for the truth about a lost continent and a revelation that could ignite a global war.

But Sigma Force has its own difficulties at home after an explosive attack on the National Mall—one aimed at the heart of their covert agency—has left them vulnerable and exposed. The growing conflict—both on Russian soil and deep in the Arctic—will reignite a centuries-old war between the newly resurgent Russian Orthodox Church and the Vatican, while sabers rattle across the nations of the Arctic Circle, threatening to turn those icy seas into a fiery conflagration. Facing enemies on all sides, it will be up to Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force to unravel a mystery going back millennia—and uncover the truth about a lost civilization and an arcane treasure that could save the planet…or destroy it.

Wrote that Review Update #521, August 4th

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
If you want to participate, set a certain amount of reviews to write, and once you make that goal, you can get a reward!

My reviews to reward is writing all of the reviews of the week, and I motivated myself to write my review for The Phoenix Keeper, Lucero, Ami, The Outlier, Soulprint, The Heretic Royal, Sanctuary, The Grandest Game, 49 Miles Alone, A Cursed Son, Cold as Hell, Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear, The Mirror of Beasts, so I have 13 of 13 reviews written!

And as always, I want to review this week's reviews!

What about you guys? Happy reading!

How Well I Stuck to It #524, August 4th

So I decided that I should have accountability on sticking to what should be in a week, so I'm doing How Well I Stuck to It every Sunday, because my schedule should be fixed in by now!

Week 32:
Arkangel by James Rollins

NetGalley: NA.

Edelweiss: NA.

New Books: 1. Check.

One new book that I just need to read, and there's plenty more that I want to read, but it doesn't have to be right away...

Week 31:
The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, The Mirror of Beasts by Alexandra Bracken, Sanctuary by Ilona Andrews

vs.

The Phoenix Keeper by S.A. MacLean, Lucero by Maya Montayne, Ami by S. Jae-Jones, The Outlier by Elisabeth Eaves, Soulprint by Megan Miranda, The Heretic Royal by G.A. Aiken, Sanctuary by Ilona Andrews, The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, 49 Miles Alone by Natalie D. Richards, A Cursed Son by Day Leitao, Cold as Hell by Kelley Armstrong, Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire, The Mirror of Beasts by Alexandra Bracken

I read what I wanted, and a few others, so it was a great week and I can't wait for next week! What about you guys? Happy reading!

Wheel of TBR #219, August 4th

I saw Codie's Book Corner doing the Wheel of TBR, and I thought that sounded like a great way to pick what to read from your TBR. So thanks to her! I'll only do 3 spins, because I'm doing this every week, and so it won't make up my total TBR of the week, but it'll be a start!

Rules:
1. For each week of the month, I'll do 3 spins each week to read each week though I do have the rest of the month to read them. Once a prompt is used, I'll randomly choose one from the list, keeping track of how often a colour comes up. If colour comes up 3 or more times in month, I'll do another spin once it comes up 3 times.
2. If I don't read a book that week or at least start it before the end of the month, then for my next week of spins, I have to add a punishment for each book unread. I'll roll for each unread book, and have to apply each and every punishment chosen to the week.
3. Each month I'll get a prompt from my Binge Read Wheel (either specifically picking the prompt, or spinning the wheel) and I have to read at least 9 books, though I can read more!

Of the books from the last week, I read Soulprint by Megan Miranda The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Tallulah's Back in Town by Brenda Novak.

Binge Read Wheel:
For this month, I chose ARC. I read A Cursed Son by Day Leitao, Cold as Hell by Kelley Armstrong, Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire, so I've read 3/9+.

For this past month, the wheel picked Yearly TBR. I read The Outlier by Elisabeth Eaves, The Heretic Royal by G.A. Aiken, Sanctuary by Ilona Andrews, 49 Miles Alone by Natalie D. Richards, so I've read 21/9+.

Prompts Used This Week:
2nd Chance, Monthly ARC, Favorite Author.

2nd Chance-Blue-The Wren in the Holly Library by K A Lindle-I started this book, but wasn't able to read more of it, so I'll be giving this book a 2nd chance!

Monthly ARC-Rose-Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma-This is an September 2024 Monthly ARC, and I need to read it, so I'll use that!

Favorite Author-Yellow-Arkangel by James Rollins-James Rollins is one of my favourite authors, and this book comes out on Tuesday and I can't wait to read it!

Colour Totals:
Red: 0
Orange: 0
Yellow: 1
Chartreuse: 0
Green: 0
Spring Green: 0

The Reward Challenge Update #672, August 4th

The Reward Challenge is almost the complete opposite to a book buying ban as you'll end up buying lots of new books throughout the challenge but only after you've completed a certain amount of reading. It was hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly, so thanks to her for starting it!

OK, so I read The Phoenix Keeper which counts 5 times as a DAC Book, NetGalley Book, SAC 2024 Book and a WoW Book, Lucero which counts 4 times as a End of Series 2024 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, Ami which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, The Outlier which counts 3 times as a NetGalley Book and a SAC 2024 Book, Soulprint which counts 5 times as a 2024 Dystopia Book, LLFL Book, SAC 2024 Book and a WoW Book, The Heretic Royal which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, Sanctuary which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, The Grandest Game which counts 3 times as a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, 49 Miles Alone which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, SAC 2024 Book and a WoW Book, A Cursed Son which counts 3 times as a NetGalley Book and a Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book, Cold as Hell which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear which counts 4 times as a NetGalley Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book, The Mirror of Beasts which counts 5 times as a 2024 Retelling Reading Challenge 2024 Book, End of Series 2024 Book, Prequel & Sequel Challenge 2024 Book and a WoW Book.

So I have 51 counts which translates to $25.50 this week! I'll use it to buy books!

Week 31 Review: The Mirror of Beasts

From Goodreads:
With the dream of Avalon in ruins, Tamsin and her friends are all that stands in the way of Lord Death's plans to unleash the horrors of Anwnn on the world of the living. As the Wild Hunt carves a bloody path across continents, Tamsin is mustering allies, tracking down powerful artifacts, and traversing into new otherlands in search of a way to stop him.

Legend tells of a "Mirror of Beasts," powerful enough to trap even Lord Death in its accursed glass, but the mirror is not all that it seems. Tamsin must confront her own darkest secrets if she hopes to tap the mirror's strength to defeat her enemies.

Arthurian legend bleeds into contemporary action, and scars of the past are torn open anew by a starcrossed love that refuses to go quietly. This riveting conclusion to the Silver in the Bone duology will hold you in its thrall until the very last page.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! I've loved her books from the beginning, and I had to know how this story would continue on after the ending of the first book. It was such a wild ride, and such a great story, and I couldn't get enough!

The cliffhanger ending of the first book, where it left these characters, I had to know how they were going to deal with that. What happened was pretty game changing, and I loved seeing how they adapted, and found a way forward.

Tamsin went through a lot, with her brother and with how she was betrayed. That she wasn't someone who trusted easily in the first place, that was hard for her to deal with. It was so engaging to watch her deal with those emotions, and how she can continue to put her trust in people.

I wasn't sure how they were going to deal with everything, but I knew I could trust Alexandra Bracken to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion, and she did! It was so well done, so entertaining, and really great to see where we left these characters!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait for whatever's next from Alexandra Bracken!

Week 31 Review: Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear

From Goodreads:
Giant turtles, impossible ships, and tidal rivers ridden by a Drowned girl in search of a family in the latest in the bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-Winning Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire.

Nadya had three mothers: the one who bore her, the country that poisoned her, and the one who adopted her.

Nadya never considered herself less than whole, not until her adoptive parents fitted her with a prosthetic arm against her will, seeking to replace the one she'd been missing from birth.

It was cumbersome; it was uncomfortable; it was wrong.

It wasn't her.

Frustrated and unable to express why, Nadya began to wander, until the day she fell through a door into Belyrreka, the Land Beneath the Lake--and found herself in a world of water, filled with child-eating amphibians, majestic giant turtles, and impossible ships that sailed as happily beneath the surface as on top. In Belyrreka, she found herself understood for who she was: a Drowned Girl, who had made her way to her real home, accepted by the river and its people.

But even in Belyrreka, there are dangers, and trials, and Nadya would soon find herself fighting to keep hold of everything she had come to treasure.

My Review:
Oh, I loved reading this book! I love Seanan McGuire's writing and this world so much, and this latest story, another one with the kid first coming to a new world, was great, I really enjoyed getting to Nadya and the world that fits her!

Nadya was born without one arm, and was raised in an orphanage, before a couple from America adopt her. She's strong and resilient, and being forced to wear a prosthetic, without being asked if she wanted to, yeah. Her thoughts about her adoptive parents, about how they treat her like a thing and not a child, felt very true!

The world of Belyrreka, of the drowned and all the water, and the turtles, I really enjoyed watching Nadya learn and explore it as a scout, with Burian. The understanding this world has of the doors and the children that find themselves in different world was really well done!

Of course, this is an even book in the series, meaning that this is a story of a child's time in their true world, meaning that they eventually end up back in our world, no matter how much they don't want to. Nadya's future, back with her adoptive parents, well, I really hope she's going to be able to get back to Belyrreka and the life that she built there!

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Seanan McGuire!
