A lush, sweeping queer historical romance from the bestselling author of Boyfriend Material—perfect for fans of Netflix's Bridgerton, Evie Dunmore, and Lisa Kleypas!
When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title, and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.
Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.
As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.
My Review:
This was such a delightful read! I've really enjoyed Alexis Hall's other books, but this was the first historical that I've read from them (they've said to use whatever pronouns) and dwow, I really enjoyed it! I really enjoyed Viola and Gracewood's story!
Viola and Gracewood were best friends, before Viola was thought to have died on the battlefield, and then transitioned. Gracewood thinks that his best friend is dead, and is kinda deteriorating. Which of course Viola feels awful for.
I really enjoyed seeing them reconnect, before and after Gracewood knows about Viola's transition. He did react a bit poorly at first, but it was a shock, plus the whole thinking this person was dead. Their romance was utterly adorable, they had so much history, and were such great friends, and were even better romantic partners!
There was a external plot going on with his sister and her coming out, not in the closet sense but out in society, which I really enjoyed. It was a lot more dramatic then they were anticipating though! Loved how it turned out!
This was a fantastic read and I can't wait to read more by Alexis Hall!
