Week 49 Review: Of Fire and Stars

From Goodreads:
Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile lands. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.

Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria's formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine (called Mare), sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, each discovers there's more to the other than she thought. Mare is surprised by Denna's intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare's independent streak. Soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.

My Review:
This book was so awesome! I loved the world and the gods and the powers, though I do wish that there had been a bit more detail so I could just immerse myself more in it. Otherwise, it was just so fantastic to read! I loved it!

I really enjoyed reading about Denna-of how she was raised to be this perfect princess-and had a power that in the kingdom that she was marrying into, was sacrilege. Yeah. And then Mare, who was everything but a perfect princess, who snuck out and wore pants and pretended to be ordinary, who didn't take on responsibility. Though she wasn't really given any.

There was the mystery of who the bad guy was, what with the religious and non-magical sentiments going around. So there were those two groups. And while that was going on, Denna and Mare were working together with that, and yeah, that was just so awesome!

I loved their relationship, how Denna was supposed to marry Mare's brother, but Denna and Mare fell in love. And yeah, at least lesbian and gay couples were accepted in this world, and that was really awesome! And yeah, having that work out in the ending was so fantastic! I loved it!

Such a great book, so sweet to read, and I can't wait for Audrey Coulthurst's next book!
