The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot. Part of it was the book, part of it was that that was right before I suddenly had a bunch of time because we moved to an acreage and if I wanted to go somewhere, I would need an adult, so I turned to reading, because of that book, so I hold memories of it fondly.
