The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…
Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—
The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.
And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.
Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.
My Review:
Oh, what a great début book! There was Victoria era clothing, and manners, at times, and yet it seemed to me that times were changing, that soon things would be more and more like today, for example, the World Fair, where the Spirit-Hunters were working out of!
I enjoyed Eleanor, and I felt sorry for her about her mom, and her situation, how they had been steady been selling off things, and didn't have much in the way of money. Mostly because of one of the factory's of her dad's being bombed, and then no one would hire them any more, and that lead to her dad's death.
We do find out who was responsible, Daniel was the scapegoat, and then a group of powerful guys were the true masterminds. One of whom had a son, a son that's now maybe courting Eleanor. And her sister, who was a bit strange, but a nice enough person!
I loved how Daniel called Eleanor Miss Fitt, which sounds like misfit, that was just really, really funny, and how it annoyed her! It's just the sort of juvenile behaviour-I like you, so I'm going to torment you, and it was just so darned cute!
I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read more!!
