From Goodreads:
In brand-new stories spun off from the New York Times Bestselling Kitty Norville series, dark mysteries push the bounds of sanity. Cormac Bennett, ex-con and former bounty hunter, is a paranormal investigator with an edge: his partner is the disembodied spirit of a Victorian wizard, Amelia Parker. Together, they solve problems no one else can.
They're asked to investigate a mysterious death in the Sierra Nevadas: a man died of hunger —in a cabin that was fully stocked with provisions. The kicker? The cabin is located near Donner Pass, the site of the gruesomely ill-fated Donner Party, where forty men, women, and children died of exposure and starvation. The event was made famous by reports of cannibalism among the survivors.
Is the Donner site haunted? Is some evil force rising again after a hundred fifty years to wreak destruction? Can Cormac and Amelia learn the truth without being caught in the web? Well, they can try...

Cormac and Amelia travel to South Dakota, where an archeologist has hired them to examine an artifact for possible magical qualities. Cormac is skeptical, Amelia is intrigued. And it turns out – the whole thing is a trap. Cormac used to make his living killing monsters, and he made more than a few enemies back in the day. Who from his past is out for revenge, and can he and Amelia survive?
My Review:
I'm so glad that we got these stories! Apparently they're from the time right after the main Kitty series ended, and they stalled out. And then Carrie Vaughn realized they weren't full length novels like she'd been trying for, but novellas. And they work perfectly as novellas, I really enjoyed both of these stories, they were nice lengths, and such quick and easy reads!
Dark Divide was interesting because it was a place where Amelia was meaning to go, but didn't get around to it. And it's the place where the Donner Party happened, which is pretty important to the story, because the case that they're brought into investigate is about a guy who starved to death. So that was a really interesting story!
Badlands Witch, well, Cormac's past comes to bite him. And while there was a thread of two of this story that I'd like to explore (what was with the bad guy's past, she mentioned something, and I'd like to learn more) it was a really satisfying story, because Cormac had the chance to not have Amelia in his head. Really enjoyed how it all played out!
Also, a simmering plot line is their relationship maybe going in a romantic direction, however impossible it is. And it definitely hits a turning point in Badlands Witch, which was so great to read! I need more, of them working things out, and more of them investigating because it's so much fun to read!
I love that we get more of this story, and I would love to have more, besides The Immortal Conquistador and Kitty's Mix-Tapes!
