Week 16 Reviews: The Crown of Embers, The Bitter Kingdom, The Empire of Dreams

From Goodreads:
She does not know what awaits her at the enemy's gate.

Elisa is a hero.

She led her people to victory over a terrifying, sorcerous army. Her place as the country's ruler should be secure. But it isn't.

Her enemies come at her like ghosts in a dream, from foreign realms and even from within her own court. And her destiny as the chosen one has not yet been fulfilled.

To conquer the power she bears, once and for all, Elisa must follow a trial of long-forgotten—and forbidden—clues, from the deep, hidden catacombs of her own city to the treacherous seas. With her go a one-eyed spy, a traitor, and the man whom—despite everything—she is falling in love with.

If she's lucky, she will return from this journey. But there will be a cost.

From Goodreads:
Elisa is a fugitive in her own country. Her enemies have stolen the man she loves in order to lure her to the gate of darkness. As she and her daring companions take one last quest into unknown enemy territory to save Hector, Elisa will face hardships she's never imagined. And she will discover secrets about herself and her world that could change the course of history. She must rise up as champion-a champion to those who have hated her most.

From Goodreads:
New York Times-bestselling author Rae Carson makes a triumphant return to the world of her award-winning Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy in this extraordinary stand-alone novel. With action, adventure, and a heroine set on destroying the patriarchal limits meant to keep her in her place, The Empire of Dreams once again proves that Rae Carson is a master of epic fantasy.

Even though Red Sparkle Stone is a foundling orphan with an odd name and a veiled past, she's about to be adopted into the royal family—by Empress Elisa herself. Sixteen-year-old Red can hardly believe her luck. Then, in a stunning political masterstroke, the empress's greatest rival blocks the adoption, and Red is left with no family and no future.

Grieving and lost, but determined to find her place, Red hatches a daring plan: she will prove herself as a recruit for the world's most elite fighting force, the legendary Royal Guard—something no woman has done before. But it's no coincidence that someone wanted her to fail as a princess, someone whose shadowy agenda puts everything she loves at risk. As danger closes in, it will be up to Red and her new friends—and maybe some new enemies—to save the empire. If they can survive recruitment year.

My Review:
Wow, I just loved reading these books again! I just love this world, and Rae Carson's writing! Elisa is a fantastic character, and I'm so glad that we got another book staring Red. Getting to know her story from her side of things was so great, though really hard at times in the past chapters!

I kinda remembered what happened in Embers and Kingdom. The broad strokes, but not how Elisa navigated the treacherous waters of her court and her enemies and sometimes her friends. It was thrilling to watch her go on this journey again, she's just a really great character to read about!

For some reason, I thought that the Empire that Elise created would last 100 years. But I confused the whole "it's not going to last forever" with the 100 years, well, 80 years, until the next bearer. My mind just makes weird connections like that!

Wow, Red has had it tough! The past chapters were had to read, because I knew where they would read, and she's a child and she's suffering. I was glad to get to the present chapters, watching her train and investigate, and fight back against a plot. It was so great to read!

Loved reading these books, and I can't wait to read more by Rae Carson!
