Week 12 Review: Go the Distance

From Goodreads:
What if Meg had to become a god?

After Hercules proves he's a true hero and regains his godship, all seems right in the world. That is, until Zeus tells Meg that she can't be with Hercules because she's, well, mortal. Luckily, Hera has a solution, offering Meg a chance to prove herself worthy of a spot on Mt. Olympus--as a god. All Meg has to do is complete a mysterious quest.

The mission? Oh, just to rescue her ex's current wife from the Underworld. The ex-boyfriend she saved by selling her soul to Hades. The ex-boyfriend who immediately moved on to someone else while she was stuck in the Underworld. Can Meg put her past behind her and use her quick-wit to defeat monsters and gods alike, including the nefarious Hades? Will she finally figure out her place and contribution to the world? Or will her fear of commitment have her running away from an eternity of godhood with Herc?

Written by the author of Mirror, Mirror and Conceal, Don't Feel, Jen Calonita's latest twist is sure to delight and surprise.

My Review:
I loved reading this book so much! I love this series a lot, and Hercules is one of my favourite Disney movies! And this one's twist was pretty great in that it takes place right at the end of the movie-so there's no plot points that they have to hit to stay familiar. Kind of like Mulan, but in a totally different way. The story could really go anywhere within the confines of who these characters were!

This is Meg's story, and I really enjoyed being in her head! She has a lot of insecurities about people leaving, about loving, and Hercules becoming a god really puts a cramp in their relationship. I really enjoyed watching her go on this journey, and really find her self-worth!

I love to hate on the idea that Zeus saw where Hercules was as a child-and left him there, so that he'd be in a position to help once he grew up. It's a pretty awful thing for a father to use his son like that, and pretty heartbreaking for his mother. It does make sense, he had most of that potion and only retained his god strength, but it was still hard.

In the movie, it was only briefly touched upon how Meg sold her soul to Hades to help her lover, and when she got back to him, he'd found another. This book focuses a lot on that. I loved how that story turned out, and how everything worked out for these characters! The journey that Meg goes on was really great, and I loved watching her learn new lessons about trusting other people, as well as yourself!

Loved reading this book, and I am this close to being fully caught up with this series, yeah!
