Week 31 Reviews: Kate and Jesse, Retribution Rails

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER REVENGE?

Kate Thompson thought avenging her father's death would help her sleep easier, but nothing has been easy since she killed the notorious outlaw Waylan Rose. Then Jesse Colton rides back into her life and the nightmares that used to visit her each evening begin to fade. At least until the papers bring word of train robberies in the south—heists staged by a man claiming to be Waylan Rose's half brother.

Knowing that the ghosts of her past may come to claim her, Kate will have to choose: cut Jesse loose and face the Rose Riders alone, or follow her heart—even if it means risking everything she holds dear.

Previously available only to readers who preordered Retribution Rails, don't miss this thrilling novella that bridges the gap between Vengeance Road and Retribution Rails.

From Goodreads:
REDEMPTION IS NEVER FREE
When Reece Murphy is forcibly dragged into the Rose Riders gang because of a mysterious gold coin in his possession, he vows to find the man who gave him the piece and turn him over to the gang in exchange for freedom. Never does he expect a lead to come from an aspiring female journalist. But when Reece's path crosses with Charlotte Vaughn after a botched train robbery and she mentions a promising rumor about a gunslinger from Prescott, it becomes apparent that she will be his ticket to freedom—or a noose. As the two manipulate each other for their own ends, past secrets are unearthed, reviving a decade-old quest for revenge that may be impossible to settle.

In this thrilling companion to Vengeance Road, dangerous alliances are formed, old friends meet new enemies, and the West is wilder than ever.

My Review:
Oh, I really enjoyed reading these books! I loved Vengeance Road, and I had to finish off this duology! And these were both great reads, I loved seeing this period of time in Kate and Jesse's lives, and how they got to the point that they were in Retribution Rails!

I really enjoyed seeing Kate and Jesse's lives as they settled into normalcy. Of course, things aren't simple, that there was a brother in the Rose Riders who has taken up the mantle, which is a threat to the life that they built.

And of course, he's still a threat in Retribution Rails-having taken hostage a boy who got a coin from Jesse-a coin linked to everything that went down in Vengeance Road-and he's meant to identify Jesse. So yeah Reece is not in a good position.

Neither is Charlotte. We briefly met the Vaughn family-at least, the one that was running the mine, on behalf of Charlotte's dad, and the wife was a piece of work. But now that her dad is dead, well, there's some awful shenanigans going on there. So there was a lot going on in this book! I loved watching it all resolve itself!

These were such great reads, and I can't wait to read more by Erin Bowman!
