Week 32 Review: The Silence of Bones

From Goodreads:
I have a mouth, but I mustn't speak;
Ears, but I mustn't hear;
Eyes, but I mustn't see.

1800, Joseon (Korea). Homesick and orphaned sixteen-year-old Seol is living out the ancient curse: "May you live in interesting times." Indentured to the police bureau, she's been tasked with assisting a well-respected young inspector with the investigation into the politically charged murder of a noblewoman.

As they delve deeper into the dead woman's secrets, Seol forms an unlikely bond of friendship with the inspector. But her loyalty is tested when he becomes the prime suspect, and Seol may be the only one capable of discovering what truly happened on the night of the murder.

But in a land where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity can be deadly.

June Hur's elegant and haunting debut The Silence of Bones is a bloody tale perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Renée Ahdieh.

My Review:
This book, oh man! I loved reading this book! I've really enjoyed getting to read June Hur's books, and I'm so glad that we're getting another one next year! I  just love her historical mysteries, because I didn't know that what is now called Korea was known as Joseon! And her mysteries are just so excellently plotted, with such great twists and reveals!

The whole part of her being indentured to the police bureau, yeah, that was rough. I just wanted to throttle those that were treating her like that. But it was interesting to see how she could help in this investigation of this very well-placed lady with all of her secrets.

I listened to the audiobook, so I'm not certain of this, but I'm wondering if The Red Palace, which was published after (and probably written, but maybe not) this book, since they both involve the police bureau, and I thought Hyeon was mentioned as helping during the autopsy, and given that The Red Palace takes place 48 years before this book, it's possible.

But oh, that ending! I have so many feelings about, that the mystery was solved, but how, and all that went down with the inspector, I wish it could've been different, because oh man, that hurt! There was a bit of happiness there, but it was overall a really sad ending!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by June Hur!
