Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to "fragile" humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
My Review:
Wow, this was such a fantastic read! And I can totally understand why it got all this hype, it has all the elements needed, with an interesting hook, characters to root for and compelling writing! I had such a great time reading it, and I can't wait to continue!
Violet has a condition that affects her joints, meaning that being a dragon rider is something that she's not made for. But her mom forces her, and I loved Violet's journey, of facing down these challenges, and finding that she actually wants to become a dragon rider! I loved her dragons! Their personalities just flew off the page!
And then there's Xaden. He was the brooding bad boy, son of the leader of the resistance, and someone that she shouldn't get along with. But circumstances bring them together, and I just loved their chemistry! Despite all that should keep them apart, they are just so good together!
That ending, man, that ending! That there were those reveals, that were pretty devastating, and I need to know what's going to happen next! I've read the synopsis of the second book, and I'm not sure how things go from the ending of this one to the situation mentioned in book 2, but I need to find out!
This was a really fantastic read, and I really need to read the sequel now!
