Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ...
Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep.
But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.
When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.
A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom...
My first review of Beyond the Black Door
My Review:
Oh man, I loved reading this book again! This world with Soulwalkers was so interesting, and I love Kamai, and her story as her world is rocked, and she finds a place for herself! Plus the ace rep was so great to read!
Kamai sees a black door in every soul that she walks in. Her mom told her not to open it, but when she does, well, it kickstarts another set of elements to the plot. Learning about her magic-and the history of it, on this island, was just so great!
I just got so frustrated with some of the characters that were surrounding her. Like her father, who only really took her in because he had to, not because he wanted to, and didn't treat her very well. Same goes for her "step-brother" since their parents didn't actually marry.
Seeing all the pieces come together again, yeah, that ending was so fantastic! And I loved where we left it, it was in a good place for these characters, with some tidbits, that, alongside knowing who they are, gave us an idea of what their future looks like!
Reading this book again was so great, and I can't wait to read more by A.M. Strickland!
