Week 32 Reviews: Spells Trouble, Omens Bite, Hex You

The first book in the Sisters of Salem trilogy about twin witches from the powerhouse duo P.C. and Kristin Cast!

Double double, twins spell trouble…

Hunter and Mercy Goode are twin witches, direct descendants of the founder of their town of Goodeville. As their ancestors have done before them, it is now time for the twins to learn what it means to be Gatekeepers–the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds, ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and nightmares come to life.

When their mother becomes the first victim in a string of murders, the devastated sisters vow to avenge her death. But it will take more than magic to rein in the ancient mythological monsters who've infected their peaceful town.

Now Hunter and Mercy must come together and accept their destiny or risk being separated for good.

Something wicked this way comes...

Twin sisters, Mercy and Hunter are witches, direct descendants of the Goode family, the founders of their town. After the murder of their mother at the hands of a foul demon, they have become the protectors of the Gates to different underworlds--ancient portals between their world and realms where mythology rules and the darkest of creatures exist.

Grief has taken a terrible toll on the twins. Rather than bringing them together, their sadness has torn them apart, driving Mercy to attempt to save the crumbling Gates without her twin and Hunter into the arms of a dangerous goddess. While Mercy looks for aid from Khenti, Guardian of the Egyptian Underworld, Hunter begins to realize the goddess she's allied with is more monster than deity. She needs her sister's help, but Mercy is beyond her reach on an adventure that could cost them everything, including their world.

Mercy and Khenti are trapped in the Ancient Egyptian Underworld and need Hunter's help to escape. But while Hunter searches for a way to save them, other evil threatens Goodeville. Amphitrite is still looming–and she wants vengeance against Hunter. With the gates rapidly weakening, Amphitrite lures out a deadly creature and sets it free on the residents of Goodeville. It will take everything in Mercy and Hunter's power to stop the goddess and seal the gates once and for all.

My first review of Spells Trouble, Omens Bite
My Review:
It was really good to read through this whole series again, and then finish it out! I enjoyed the first two books, they had some flaws, but I had a good time reading about these two sisters as they dealt with their grief and with being the guardians of these gates.

Maybe my memory is fuzzy, or I skipped over a detail or something, but what caused the problem in the first place? I don't know, and that is something that I wanted to know. Oh, well, nothing to do, since the series is finished!

One thing that really got to me was how childish and awful Mercy was being, and had been. The way that she dismissed Hunter's feelings from events prior to the series-and then when they were grieving, she basically left it all to Hunter. And made her give up her god...yeah, she treated Hunter very poorly throughout until she learned better, right in time for the final book.

The third book in particular, but with bits and pieces in previous books, brought a plot of Christianity vs. witches. Which was hard, since there is all that violence and murder there from the former to the latter. But it was good to see how it all resolved and was tied into the greater plot!

Really enjoyed reading these, and I can't wait to read whatever they write next!
