Perfect for fans of Laura Ruby, Laurie Halse Anderson, and Mindy McGinnis, Kyrie McCauley's stunning YA debut is a powerful story about the haunting specter of domestic violence and the rebellious forces of sisterhood and first love.
Tens of thousands of crows invading Auburn, Pennsylvania, is a problem for everyone in town except seventeen-year-old Leighton Barnes. For Leighton, it's no stranger than her house, which inexplicably repairs itself every time her father loses his temper and breaks things.
Leighton doesn't have time for the crows--it's her senior year, and acceptance to her dream college is finally within reach. But grabbing that lifeline means abandoning her sisters, a choice she's not ready to face.
With her father's rage worsening and the town in chaos over the crows, Leighton allows herself a chance at happiness with Liam, her charming classmate, even though falling in love feels like a revolutionary act.
Balancing school, dating, and survival under the shadow of sixty thousand feathered wings starts to feel almost comfortable, but Leighton knows that this fragile equilibrium can only last so long before it shatters.
My Review:
Honestly, this book isn't what I typically read. I'm not much of a contemporary reader, that usually means there's character drama for the plot to go forward on, which just isn't my cup of tea. And that this book deals with abuse, well, neither is that. But this book sounded really great, and I really enjoyed reading it!
There was a slight bit of paranormal in this book-there's the crows that keep coming to the town, but that may or may not be because the crows were smart, and were gathering together to help Leighton's family. And then there was their house-that repaired itself of her dad's anger and other damages. So that was interesting to read!
Leighton is the oldest-she remembers what their dad was like before he got stressed about work and money, and started taking his anger out on his family. But she's going to college soon, and she doesn't want to leave her sisters alone with him in that situation. So that's fun times! Because like she remarks on, once he gets angry, he seems to find things to get even angrier about, and that he takes it out on his family, that's just horrible.
There was a bright spot in this book, and that was her relationship with Liam. It was so cute, because she's a journalist, and he's a jock, and they don't conflict, but they don't really mesh, either. But there's more to them than the labels, and watching their relationship develop-and his support when she tells him about her home situation-was entertaining reading!
This book was a really great read, and it was fantastic to read!
