In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, and friendless. Online, she's LadyConstellation, the anonymous creator of the wildly popular webcomic Monstrous Sea. Eliza can't imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves the online one, and she has no desire to try.
Then Wallace Warland, Monstrous Sea's biggest fanfiction writer, transfers to her school. Wallace thinks Eliza is just another fan, and as he draws her out of her shell, she begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile.
But when Eliza's secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she's built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.
My Review:
This book was such a fantastic read! And the fact that both Monstrous Sea-the comic she was creating, and The Children of Hypnos, the books that Eliza loved and was part of the fandom, Francesca Zappia has written, that's just so fantastic! I'm going to have to read them, because what we know of the worlds, yeah, it's intriguing to me!
Eliza preferred her online world to her in person one. And I can't blame her, her online life had so much more, from her comic to the friends she'd made there. While her in person life was just a little bit empty. And when she meets Wallace, a huge fanfiction author of her world, yeah, things get complicated!
The question about art, and what the creator owes to the consumer, is brought up. Between the author of The Children of Hypnos not releasing the final book in the series, to the events in this book, it's a good question, but one that I wish didn't have to be asked, because the implications of it even being asked, well, that puts a lot of pressure on the creator! We don't want that!
I really enjoyed Eliza going on this journey, of creating a in person life that is more vibrant, and all the messy complications that come with life. I really enjoyed watching her start to pick up the pieces in the end, it was a really fantastic ending!
