Beneath the ice at the bottom of the Earth is a magnificent subterranean labyrinth, a place of breathtaking wonders—and terrors beyond imagining. A team of specialists led by archaeologist Ashley Carter has been hand-picked to explore this secret place and to uncover the riches it holds. But they are not the first to venture here—and those they follow did not return. There are mysteries here older than time, and revelations that could change the world. But there are also things that should not be disturbed—and a devastating truth that could doom Ashley and the expedition: they are not alone.
Oh, man, this is just such a wonderful, amazing, incredible book! Such wonderful new things to be learned, and I think this is the only book that I've read that takes place in Antarctica! Because it's not the most welcoming of places, is it!
Loved these characters, and how they were brought into this project deep down under the continent, and then a comment they didn't hear, how they were the 2nd team-and what happened to the first, yeah, there was that mystery!
Oh, and the creatures! So interesting, how they were the evolution of mammal laying eggs, which is an evolutionary dead end up here. And how they had to keep a very close watch over the ecosystem, which was very fragile, seeing as humans coming messed it up very quickly!
I wish we could've gotten a little more background in who hired the guy to impersonate the geologist. Because that's why he put a bomb belt on Jason, and then set others around the camp so they couldn't come after him, and why a few people were killed! I wonder if it was the bad guys from the Sigma series...
Oh, loved this book, can't wait to reread more James Rollins books!
