Week 42 Review: The Art of Theft, Murder on Cold Street

From Goodreads:
Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today bestselling author of The Hollow of Fear.

As "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes has solved murders and found missing individuals. But she has never stolen a priceless artwork—or rather, made away with the secrets hidden behind a much-coveted canvas.

But Mrs. Watson is desperate to help her old friend recover those secrets and Charlotte finds herself involved in a fever-paced scheme to infiltrate a glamorous Yuletide ball where the painting is one handshake away from being sold and the secrets a bare breath from exposure.

Her dear friend Lord Ingram, her sister Livia, Livia's admirer Stephen Marbleton—everyone pitches in to help and everyone has a grand time. But nothing about this adventure is what it seems and disaster is biding time on the grounds of a glittering French chateau, waiting only for Charlotte to make a single mistake...

From Goodreads:
Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the USA Today bestselling series set in Victorian England.

Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes's friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.

Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife's initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage, because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Charlotte finds herself in a case strewn with lies and secrets. But which lies are to cover up small sins, and which secrets would flay open a past better left forgotten? Not to mention, how can she concentrate on these murders, when Lord Ingram, her oldest friend and sometime lover, at last dangles before her the one thing she has always wanted?

My first review of The Art of Theft
My Review:
It was really fantastic to read these books! I loved The Art of Theft the first time I read it, but I had to read it again because it's been a while, and the ending of it lead straight into Murder on a Cold Street. So it was really great to read the both of them!

The Art of Theft is different from the rest of the series in a few ways, it's the first not to take place fully in England, since the majority of the plot happens in France. It also has less of a mystery, the focus is on the theft, and the mysteries surrounding the theft. So that was really great to read!

But it was also great to read Murder on Cold Street, to get back into the swing of things. I loved the investigation, because the cops thought that Inspector Treadles had done it. And for some reason, he wasn't giving himself a defense. So it was really great to watch Charlotte investigate!

Well, I wasn't expecting it to go where it did. There were a lot of hidden secrets, but Charlotte pieced them together, and yeah, that was excellent to read. Plus there were developments in the romance for both couples. In a way, they mirrored each other, in The Art of Theft, it was Livia and Stephen Marbleton who were happy, and in this one, it's Charlotte and Lord Ingram, so that was great to read! But given the end of The Art of Theft, well, things aren't good for Livia and Stephen, but I'm hopeful for the future!

These were both such great reads, and I can't wait to read more of this series!
