Girls of Paper and Fire meets The Tiger at Midnight in June CL Tan's stunning debut, inspired by Chinese mythology, with rich magic and an epic slow-burn romance.
In an empire on the brink of war . . .
Ahn is no one, with no past and no family.
Altan is a lost heir, his future stolen away as a child.
When they meet, Altan sees in Ahn a path to reclaiming the throne. Ahn sees a way to finally unlock her past and understand her arcane magical abilities.
But they may have to pay a far deadlier price than either could have imagined.
Ferocious action, shadowy intrigue, and a captivating romance collide in June CL Tan's debut, a stunning homage to the Xianxia novel with a tender, beating heart, perfect for fans of The Bone Witch and We Hunt the Flame.
My Review:
I had an almost always great time reading this book! I did take a little while in the middle reading this book, where things were more relationship drama based and building expectations to be broken later, but then things picked up and that was really fantastic! I really enjoyed this book!
This world was pretty fantastic, with Altan being the lost crown prince, and Ahn having a pretty secret history that she didn't know herself. And then there's the whole thing where magic users are hunted, that they're though of to be causing this desert. Yeah.
Reading Ahn and Altan's histories and motivations, and how they came together, was really fantastic! What with his quest for his father's throne-more to get his uncle's family off it then to claim it himself, to her ability as the Life Stealer, they have a lot going on! And apparently not many people that they can trust, though our supporting characters were amazing!
This isn't currently a series as far as I can tell, but it better be! That epilogue means that we have to have a sequel, because his sister is alive, and she is going to cause problems, I just know it! Between the ominous nature of the epilogue, to Altan's mentions of his sister in his head, like that competition that wagered their animals-he knew if he lost, his would be killed. Yeah, she doesn't sound like a great person! So I need to see all of that play out!
