Week 38 Review: The September House

From Goodreads:
A woman is determined to stay in her dream home even after it becomes a haunted nightmare in this compulsively readable, twisty, and layered debut novel.

When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn't believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee.

Margaret is not most people.

Margaret is staying. It's her house. But after four years Hal can't take it anymore, and he leaves abruptly. Now, he's not returning calls, and their daughter Katherine—who knows nothing about the hauntings—arrives, intent on looking for her missing father. To make things worse, September has just begun, and with every attempt Margaret and Katherine make at finding Hal, the hauntings grow more harrowing, because there are some secrets the house needs to keep.

My Review:
Man, this was such a great read! I was recommended it by Katee Robert in one of her TikTok's, and it fit in perfectly with a prompt that I had to fill, and boy, was it a good read going into Spooky season! And it had such great vibes!

Margaret is so very practical. She bought this house, darn it, and she won't let it chase her away, no matter that the hauntings get more intense, that the blood runs, and there's so much to clean up. But last, something happened with her husband, and he hasn't been heard from in a while.

I loved watching Margaret with her daughter, in this house where she's trying to keep the supernatural a secret, but the various deceased inhabitants make that difficult, making it look like Margaret is dealing with mental problems.

But when we find out what had happened, and what was going on, why the house was like this? That was just awful! Loved watching how it was dealt with, that was so satisfying to read! Loved where we left them, that was in a pretty good place!

Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to read more by Carissa Orlando!
