Week 41 Review: Caraval

From Goodreads:
How far would you go to save your sister?

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

My Review:
This book was pretty great to read. I did think it had its flaws, but I really enjoyed this story, the Caraval and the highs and the lows. I enjoyed reading about Scarlett and her quest to find her sister, and I'm excited to read about Tella's story in book 2!

So I'm a bit conflicted. I'm not sure if the way the descriptions were written, was because this is a debut author and will improve in future books, or if it's the author's writing style, or the character's narration style. Whichever one it was, I guess I'll find out in the sequel, given that it's from Scarlett's sister, Tella's perspective. But yeah, the way they were written, there was just something off about them. So I hope they improve!

Scarlett and Tella have had it pretty bad, their dad is just awful. We don't spend that much time there, but the beginning when we do was hard to read. I'm glad that they got away, because nobody deserves to live like that!

Going through the Caraval, playing the game to win back her sister, it was so great to read! There was a lot happening, and it was dark and delicious and I enjoyed it so much! I really enjoyed how it all worked it, it was great to read!

I enjoyed this book, and I need to read the sequel, because I need to a) know where the story goes from here, and b) see if the writing improved for me!
