Week 41 Reviews: A Very Peri Reed Thanksgiving, Sideswiped, The Drafter, Waylaid

From Goodreads:
Ah, Thanksgiving. A time for family, friends, and… cats? Check out this exclusive content from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison on how Peri Reed, the kick-ass heroine of The Drafter & The Operator met and fell in love with her BFF Carnac the cat!

From Goodreads:
Don't miss this thrilling first look into the elite world of Peri Reed, government agency operative extraordinaire, and catch more of her character in The Drafter, the first book in the all-new suspense trilogy from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison, out September 1.

Every hero, even the accidental ones, have a beginning.

Silas's radical theory that drafters are not replaying time as much as they are temporarily sliding into an alternate universe has never been well-received, but frankly, the darling of Opti's research has enough clout not to care, until a professor with a grudge tries to put a permanent end to it. Love can't alter time, and sometimes, even being able to rub out a single mistake isn't enough…

From Goodreads:
Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run.

Don't forgive and never forget has always been Peri's creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote.

When Peri discovers her name on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. She joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her final task, unable to trust even herself.

From Goodreads:
Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of "the amazingly gifted" (RT Book Reviews) Kim Harrison's most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city's data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

My first review of Sideswiped, The Drafter
My Review:
It was really great to read these stories! I had read all but Waylaid before, but that was years ago, and I forgot most of it, so it was really great to read them again. Plus Waylaid is special, because it's a crossover of this series and the Hollows series, so it was really fantastic to watch Peri and Rachel interact!

This world of drafters is so interesting. Because to be a drafter means repeating a range of time dependent on the drafter's ability. But that they have to have an anchor who can remember both drafts, and erase the first one, so the drafter only remembers the 2nd. But there's a cost, the drafter loses memories of before the draft, depending on how important and volatile that first time through was.

I really enjoyed reading about Peri, she has to deal with a drafter's memory, losing time. But she's used to the finer things in life, is a little bit too comfortable in her life, that she's a good agent. And then it turns out that she's a dirty agent, that so much in her life is a lie, and things go off from there. It was such a great mystery the first time, and I really enjoyed reading it again!

I was a little unsure about where on the series timeline Waylaid took place. After all, the first chapter has Peri and Jack, which would imply that it happened before the start of The Drafter. So that was a bit of a mystery to figure out. And we don't get an exact time that I found, but it is somewhere in that period between Sideswiped and The Drafter when Jack was Peri's partner. I do wish we could've had a bonus scene at the end when Rachel and Jenks get back, but alas!

I loved reading these stories, and I can't wait to read The Operator!
