Week 19 Review: Wild Country

From Goodreads:
In this powerful and exciting fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, humans and the shape-shifting Others will see whether they can live side by side...without destroying one another.

There are ghost towns in the world—places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others.

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the northern end of the Elder Hills—a town surrounded by the wild country. Now efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together. A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff. A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon. And a couple with four foster children—one of whom is a blood prophet—hope to find acceptance.

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit. And the arrival of the Blackstone Clan, outlaws and gamblers all, will uncover secrets…or bury them.

My Review:
I love this book. I love this world, the writing, the characters, the story, it's all just so great. It's a really great story, of humanity and the Others trying to find a new equilibrium after Humans First and Last's doomed war.

I found it funny that while I was reading this series, which the bookmark I used, because it was one for Lake Silence, and that's the only one I'm not reading right now, because we're visiting the characters with the 2022 release, so I'm going to reread it closer to then. But I found that hilarious!

This book takes place congruently with Etched in Bone, and catches up with some of the characters from Marked in Flesh, as well as some new ones. I loved getting more of Jessie and Tobias, and meeting Jana and Virgil!

There were some hilarious and cute moments, like Cowboy Bob, and then there were more serious moments, from Abbie and the Blackstone clan. But they all worked together to keep the story going, and they were fantastic to read.

One thing that I really loved about this book, was that ending, with the sign that Virgil made for the office. It was just so sweet, and I'm just so glad that it was a part of this book, a sign of how much of a bond that they have now. After their rocky start, and everything that happened to them, I'm just glad for that sign!

This was an excellent read, and I can't wait to continue with this world!
