Week 42 Review: Defending Elysium

From Goodreads:
This story originally appeared in the October/November 2008 Asimov's Science Fiction (in the US) and the UPC Science Fiction collection (in Europe).

"An image came to him. An image of humankind escaping into space. An image of human merchants trading and cheating, of human tyrants capturing the Varvax, Tenasi, and Hommar. Images of wars, of fighting, of a paradise destroyed."

Oddly enough, the ones who made first contact were an outdated, nearly bankrupt phone company. Second contact was made by the United Governments Military when they accidentally shot down a Tenasi ambassadorial vessel. The Phone Company negotiated Earth out of danger following the Tenasi incident. The Phone Company had brought FTL communication to humankind.

And Phone Company operative Jason Write has sworn to keep the galaxy safe from the barbaric humans who would ruin the Elysium that the galactic races currently enjoy.

My Review:
Wow, it was really fantastic to read this short story. I knew that it was set in the Skyward series, but that it's a world that is just a little more advanced then we currently have, and on the brink of the technology that caused everything in the Skyward series to be as it is. Yeah, I would love to spend a bit more time in this part of the timeline of the series!

I loved the idea of the Phone Company. Of how it made first contact with aliens, and now have this unique position in the world. Part secret agent, part scientist, and how people react to them! We had another character's view point, and how he viewed the Phone Company, wow!

Jason was a really interesting character to read about! He had his secrets that he kept from other people, and from us the reader. He was pretty smart and seeing him work out the mystery made for very entertaining reading!

That ending! There was the compounding reveals, some were really big and emotional, and then there was that one cute one. It was a really great ending, there was growth and movement in the story, and I can see how we got to where they were in Skyward!

This was a really fantastic read, and I can't wait for Skyward 3!
