Atlanta, 1974.
As a brutal killing rocks the city, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the police force will also be her last. For life is anything but easy in the male-dominated world of the Atlanta Police Department.
Kate isn't the only woman on the force who is finding things tough. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes.
When Maggie and Kate become partners, and are sidelined in the search for the city's cop killer, they decide to pursue their own line of investigation. But are they prepared to risk everything as they venture into the city's darkest heart?
My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! Karin Slaughter's books are always so great, and unflinching when dealing with difficult topics or times, like when women are just being allowed on the police force as an officer, not in a secretarial position. But oh, that time, well, if you weren't a cis-heteronormal white man, chances were that things would be much harder for you.
Kate is having her first day as a cop, right in the middle of a pretty tense situation with someone targeting cops. Maggie's family is basically all cops, and her brother was recently involved when he and his partner were targeted. Which makes it a pretty unwelcoming time to be a woman in the police force.
One thing that I loved, was the dark and gritty nature that is very true. Part of Kate's journey involves some violence that I wasn't really expecting, but it was really well done. I just had to keep reading this story and find out what was going on!
Following along with the mystery was so great, because even Maggie's family members are keeping secrets from her, and she has to work hard to uncover them, even if they are damaging. That ending though, yeah, that was pretty intense!
