In the Houses of Montague and Capulet, there is only one goal: power. The boys are born to fight and die for honor and—if they survive—marry for influence and money, not love. The girls are assets, to be spent wisely. Their wishes are of no import. Their fates are written on the day they are born.
Benvolio Montague, cousin to Romeo, knows all this. He expects to die for his cousin, for his house, but a spark of rebellion still lives inside him. At night, he is the Prince of Shadows, the greatest thief in Verona—and he risks all as he steals from House Capulet. In doing so, he sets eyes on convent-bound Rosaline, and a terrible curse begins that will claim the lives of many in Verona…
… And will rewrite all their fates, forever.
My Review:
Oh, this was such a great read! Romeo and Juliet was one of the plays that I had to study in school, plus it's so ingrained in our collective social culture, so I did know the story. And having a retelling with these side characters was something I was really looking forward to! Plus it's by Rachel Caine, and I utterly love her books!
We're in Benvolio's perspective, cousin of Romeo. His mom is English, and his dad is dead, so he's not considered an important member of the family, and is tasked with taking care of his cousin, heir of the house, Romeo. Well, we all know how that went! And when you add Rachel Caine's take, with making him a thief, well, it added another layer that I really liked!
The relationship with him and Rosaline, was really great. Because she was in a pretty bad situation, that her family wanted to send her off to be a nun, and he protects her from that. And compared to Romeo and Juliet's love, which is the classic insta-love, it's much more developed.
I loved that ending! That they were all just going to talk about how bad it was that these two kids died for love, but then not let these other two kids be together? Yeah, that worked out really well, and I'm glad that it did!
Loved reading this story, and I'm so glad that it exits!
