Public radio co-hosts navigate mixed signals in Rachel Lynn Solomon's sparkling romantic comedy debut.
Shay Goldstein has been a producer at her Seattle public radio station for nearly a decade, and she can't imagine working anywhere else. But lately it's been a constant clash between her and her newest colleague, Dominic Yun, who's fresh off a journalism master's program and convinced he knows everything about public radio.
When the struggling station needs a new concept, Shay proposes a show that her boss green-lights with excitement. On The Ex Talk, two exes will deliver relationship advice live, on air. Their boss decides Shay and Dominic are the perfect co-hosts, given how much they already despise each other. Neither loves the idea of lying to listeners, but it's this or unemployment. Their audience gets invested fast, and it's not long before The Ex Talk becomes a must-listen in Seattle and climbs podcast charts.
As the show gets bigger, so does their deception, especially when Shay and Dominic start to catch feelings for each other. In an industry that values truth, getting caught could mean the end of more than just their careers.
My Review:
Oh man, this was such a great read! The whole idea of these two coworkers who didn't really get along, having to pretend they dated and broke up as a concept for this radio show, is daring and a little crazy! I had to see how it would play out!
Shay and Dominic don't get along. She used to be the risking star who came in when she was young, and was meant for good things. And he's come in, and basically achieved in a couple of months what it took her a decade. Plus he has his fancy degree that he can't help but mentioning. So they don't get along very well.
So when she proposes a talk show with exes, who talk about relationships, and working together, they get pulled into it, because there is that way that they bicker. I loved watching them actually get to know each other, fall in love, while dealing with this success that is coming off of their lie. And how they worked everything out once it came out!
Honestly, if I were them, I would've gone onto Twitter, and added that their boss convinced them to do this, that it wasn't their idea. If he thought that it was appropriate to out them like that, then he should experience the same. He was awful and sexist, and while it was a bit satisfying what ended up happening there, it didn't totally scratch the itch of payback!
