It was so great to reread this series! What with the 3rd Crescent City book coming out soon, I had to reread all of her books (I'll never read the DC Icon book though) just on the off chance that they're all going to be included. They already are connected because of that one bit in Kingdom of Ash, but I have no idea if these characters are going to make an appearance in House of Flame and Shadow. And I was due a reread anyways, it's been over 4 years since I last read them!
It was so great to reread this series! One thing that I've learned since I last read this series, is that Sarah J. Maas was inspired by the Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop. I hadn't read that series then, but I have now. And I can definitely see some influences. Like the killing fields, specifically walking onto them. That's very much a phrase from that series, so that was interesting to pick up on!
Even though I've read most of the series at least twice, it was still hard to get through Underworld and Empire. It's been a while, so while I knew it was rough, I had forgotten just how hard it was, and it was difficult to read the both of them, but I knew something better was coming, so I'm glad I kept going!
These books set up the core of the series, of Celena/Aelin, Chaol, Dorian, and Manon. When I first read Heir of Fire, I honestly wanted to skip Manon's parts, because she was a new character and I didn't know what a role she was going to play. And I just love her now, even knowing the pain that's coming her way. I'm so glad that I'm doing this reread!
Loved reading this series again, it's just so good, and I can't wait to continue on!
