The King holds the key to Koraha's existence, but a formidable new enemy threatens Koraha's very survival and the King desperately needs Shyla and Rendor's help.

Wielding a terrifying and unknown magical power that can convert opponents into devoted soldiers, the mysterious army is hellbent on usurping the crown. Shyla and Rendor are tasked with discovering who in the seven hells these insurgents are. And what their real endgame is.

Trekking through the punishing conditions across the searing surface of Koraha, and facing numerous unseen foes and untold danger, they must follow the clues to uncover the truth before it's too late. The fate of the King and all the citizens of Koraha rests in their hands...

My Review:
This was such a great end to the series! I'm going to be sad to say goodbye to these characters, but boy did they have a good run, and I had such a great time reading their adventures! This was just a fantastic book, and I loved it so much!

This book really opened up the world. In the first two books, other cities were mentioned, but they took place in and around Zirdai. In this book, we visit a number of new cities, including the capital, to meet the king, and it was so great to see the various wonders of this world!

The investigation into the missing taxes was very intriguing to lead, especially since it swiftly lead to the plot to totally restructure how the cities work, to eliminate the need for the king, basically. We really got to delve into the past of this world, of some pretty ancient artifacts, and that was so interesting to read!

That part where she was under control, that was really hard to read. There were some points where she almost pulled away, but until she got help, there wasn't much she could do for herself, because she didn't know that she needed it, and that was hard.

I loved that Shyla had to utilize her skills-of research, of magic, and of the eyes, to fully win this fight. She was clever, and she's collected a really fantastic group of people around her to help, even though for the majority of this book, she only had Rendor. Loved that her using her strengths helped her beat the bad guys!

Loved reading this book, it was such a fantastic book, and I can't wait to read more Maria V. Snyder books!
