Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that's their secret weapon.
They've spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they're sixty years old, four women friends can't just retire – it's kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.
Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.
When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they've been marked for death.
Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They're about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.
My Review:
This was such a fantastic read! I loved reading about this group of female assassins, who are at 40 years of working their jobs. I love Deanna Raybourn's books, and this was wildly different then anything that's she's published before, they've all been historical. And while there were flashbacks to Billie's early years in the 80's, that's not as far back as her two main series! And I had such a great time with this book!
The idea of this group of elderly assassins dealing with their employers turning on them, hunting them down was intense to read. And watching them pit themselves against the younger generation, well, there's a reason why they've survived this long in this world!
While the bulk of this story takes place in the present, we did get flashes of Billie's life, of their first few missions, their training, and these moments that introduced us to those that are now in charge of the Museum, who have now ordered to have them killed. I loved getting this history, and how much of a betrayal it is!
These ladies were old school, and I loved the clever ways that they went after those in charge. They were creative and so much fun to read! And how it all built up, that ending was fantastic, but it was over so quickly! I can't get enough, I always want more from the post-climax!
This was a fantastic read, and if we get more of these characters in the future, I wouldn't mind that!
