Three weddings. Three funerals. Alessa's gift from the gods is supposed to magnify a partner's magic, not kill every suitor she touches.
Now, with only weeks left until a hungry swarm of demons devours everything on her island home, Alessa is running out of time to find a partner and stop the invasion. When a powerful priest convinces the faithful that killing Alessa is the island’s only hope, her own soldiers try to assassinate her.
Desperate to survive, Alessa hires Dante, a cynical outcast marked as a killer, to become her personal bodyguard. But as rebellion explodes outside the gates, Dante's dark secrets may be the biggest betrayal. He holds the key to her survival and her heart, but is he the one person who can help her master her gift or destroy her once and for all?
Emily Thiede's exciting fantasy debut, This Vicious Grace, will keep readers turning the pages until the devastating conclusion and leave them primed for more!
My Review:
This was such a fantastic book! It was such an original idea, with gods that tested the population every generation, and the Finestra and their partner, yeah, it was all really fun and engaging to read, this story of survival, with a Finestra whose power kills her partner, 3 times, and now she's running out of time!
Alessa is in a bad situation, she's the Finestra, but all of her chosen partners, haven't survived, to the point where people are getting restless, wondering if a mistake was made-if there was time, if they killed her now, to get a new Finestra. And yeah, Alessa doesn't want to die, so she recruits Dante to be her bodyguard. I just loved their dynamic! She wasn't a shy, blushing maiden, she had her interests, and I loved their romance!
As the book went on, tensions mounted, as it became clear that their time was running out before the next hatching and swarming of demons, as their chances of survival started to dwindle, I couldn't get enough! I loved learning about this world and how the magic worked-and watching this group of kids trying to find a solution, slowly working together.
That ending was so thrilling! Watching them face off the demons with what they learned, utilizing every bit of power that they had, it was pretty intense! Plus I loved that the one antagonistic dude came out to prove that they had lied, and ended not being able to go back to safety, like, serves you right dude! The result of the battle, and the aftermath set up really well for the sequel and I can't wait to read it!
Loved reading this book and i'm so excited for the sequel!
