Week 31 Reviews: The Extraordinaries, Flash Fire

Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra. TJ Klune's YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.

Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?

After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City's mightiest hero (and Nick's biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he'll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life).

Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer's Renegades in TJ Klune's YA debut.

Flash Fire is the explosive sequel to The Extraordinaries by USA Today bestselling author TJ Klune!

Nick landed himself the superhero boyfriend of his dreams, but with new heroes arriving in Nova City it's up to Nick and his friends to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous. Which is a lot to handle for a guy who just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic.

My Review:
Oh, wow, these books were utterly fantastic! I loved Nick's voice, and he did have ADHD, and his thoughts-and sometimes he was verbalizing them-would go in these wild tangents, and they were written in such a funny way! And in this amazing world!

This world of superheroes was just excellent! Nick has been a fan of Shadow Star for so long, and now he wants to become an hero, as well. I loved the ways he went around trying to become one, they were pretty hilarious!

I loved the gang of friends that he had around him, his best friend Seth, and Gibby and Jazz. I loved how close they were, and how they interacted, and how close knit and supportive they were! Especially after the secrets were out (at least, the ones that they knew they were holding were!) They were a fantastic group of friends!

There's a lot of secrets, and a lot of reveals, and wow, were they written so excellently! I mean who Shadow Star and Pyro Storm are? And the sequel does delve into the cost of being a superhero. But that reveal at the ending of Flash Fire, I'm dying to know what's going to happen from here!

One thing that I absolutely loved, was that after the book was done, after the author bio and such, was another scene, like a mid or post-credit scene in a movie! That was just an excellent touch in this superhero series, and I love it!

Absolutely loved reading these books, and I can't wait for the final book!
