Week 53 Review: Born of Rage

From Goodreads:
#1 New York Times bestselling author, Sherrilyn McQueen returns to her League: Nemesis Rising series in this novella that also features the very first short story she sold in 1978, The Neighbors.

Every Life Has a Price

Dakari Tievel has been marked for death by the infamous League. Staying barely one step ahead of the assassins out to end her life, she must find the legendary Eve of Destruction. But Eve is a lot more than just a bounty hunter who calls the shadows home. She comes with an interesting crew of friends and family who have no problem defying the League that rules their worlds with an iron fist.

Now they must rely on the most unlikely of allies to keep Dakari safe, and themselves alive. Provided he doesn't betray them.

In a universe where the League is law, it's killed or be killed.

My Review:
So this was a bit difficult to talk about, because this is a collection of stories, there's Born of Rage, then The Neighbors, and then an updated and expanded upon version of Fire and Ice, which was previously in the anthology In Other Worlds. With all 3 of these, it was still under 100 pages.

I didn't know going in that it was 3 stories, so when I finished Born of Rage, and it was just a couple of scenes, and then I had so much left of the book, I was confused. I enjoyed getting to know these characters a bit and their story. Plus I was confused as that we were in one character's perspective for half, and then another for the rest of the story, and it wasn't a couple relationship, but a sister brother one. So that was a bit disorienting!

The Neighbors was really interesting, if also really short. I loved how it turned the tables on what you'd expect from a family living in suburbia. And apparently it's one of Sherilyn McQueen's earliest published works, so that was an interesting factoid!

Finally, Fire and Ice. I have read this story, but it was a long time ago now. So while I read that it was updated and expanded up, I'm not quite sure where those bits where, because I don't really remember what it was like originally. But I had a wonderful time reading it!

This was a really great collection of stories, I just only wish that it was longer!
