Week 53 Review: Opposite of Always

From Goodreads:
Jack Ellison King. King of Almost.

He almost made valedictorian.

He almost made varsity.

He almost got the girl . . .

When Jack and Kate meet at a party, bonding until sunrise over their mutual love of Froot Loops and their favorite flicks, Jack knows he's falling—hard. Soon she's meeting his best friends, Jillian and Franny, and Kate wins them over as easily as she did Jack. Jack's curse of almost is finally over.

But this love story is . . . complicated. It is an almost happily ever after. Because Kate dies. And their story should end there. Yet Kate's death sends Jack back to the beginning, the moment they first meet, and Kate's there again. Beautiful, radiant Kate. Healthy, happy, and charming as ever. Jack isn't sure if he's losing his mind. Still, if he has a chance to prevent Kate's death, he'll take it. Even if that means believing in time travel. However, Jack will learn that his actions are not without consequences. And when one choice turns deadly for someone else close to him, he has to figure out what he's willing to do—and let go—to save the people he loves.

My Review:
This was a really fantastic read! The whole concept of reliving this period of time-between when they meet and when she dies, over and over, of trying to change it-is such a cool idea. I really enjoyed watching Jack struggle with it all!

I really love this cover, with the different poses of the two, how their closeness, posture, and clothes change the further up the staircase they go. That this is a time travel book, and these series of events are happening over and over again, it's a clever cover!

I felt bad for Jack, the King of Almost. To have so many, to be so close, but not quite getting there, over and over, that was a really grating experience. Then he meets Kate, and thinks his luck is changed. But it hasn't, because she dies. And thus starts his repeating of these months, and the different ways he reacts, and changes things in a attempt to keep her alive.

We never really got an explanation for why this was happening but I really enjoyed watching what Jack was doing with it. The different ways that he tried to keep her from dying, and while we didn't see every scenario, we got the gist. And I enjoyed how it wrapped up!

This was a really great read, and I can't wait to read more by Justin A. Remolds!
