This is the way the world ends... for the last time.
A season of endings has begun.
It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun.
It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter.
It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.
This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.
My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. But it was really confusing. There's a lot of perspectives, and not all of them are taking place at the same time. Once I realized that, it started to make sense, there was just the question of when each perspective was taking place. Plus this world was different and interesting and I had to learn the terms for things.
Another thing making this book a big confusing was that the different perspectives were told differently. We had one where we, the reader, are told we are this mother, the one with a murdered son and a missing daughter. And then we had another perspective where it was more normal 3rd person. So that was a little jarring. But it was unique!
I really just wanted to understand what the heck was going on. There's the Orogenes who have immense power, but are feared because of it. To the point where we had one perspective of a child who it was just found out that she was an orogene, and her parents locked her up in the barn, and had someone from the power structure around orogenes come get her. Because her comm might come and kill her, now that they know that she's an orogene. Yeah.
I loved how this story wove together, it was just so well done! There was a lot going on, but it was important to what was going on. Plus there was diversity that was so well done. And the emotions! This book is painful and a weapon that hurt. It also healed because it showed difference with love and care, and that was just fantastic!
This was a really great read, and I can't wait to continue the series!
