Week 35 Reviews: The Archer at Dawn, The Chariot at Dawn

The Sun Mela is many things: a call for peace, a cause for celebration, and, above all, a deadly competition. For Kunal and Esha, finally working together as rebel spies, it provides the perfect guise to infiltrate King Vardaan's vicious court.

Kunal will return to his role as dedicated Senap soldier, at the Sun Mela to provide extra security for the palace during the peace summit for the divided nations of Jansa and Dharka. Meanwhile, Esha will use her new role as adviser to Prince Harun to keep a pulse on shifting political parties and seek out allies for their rebel cause. A radical plan is underfoot to rescue Jansa's long-lost Princess Reha—the key to the stolen throne.

But amid the Mela games and glittering festivities, much more dangerous forces lie in wait. With the rebel Blades' entry into Vardaan's court, a match has been lit, and long-held secrets will force Kunal and Esha to reconsider their loyalties—to their country and to each other. Getting into the palace was the easy task; coming out together will be a battle for their lives.

From Goodreads:
A queen at last. An empty palace. A kingdom to save.

Esha is reeling from Kunal's betrayal, but she has a kingdom to rule from behind a thin smokescreen—pretending to be Princess Reha while she sends her most trusted soldiers to collect Reha and Kunal by any means necessary. Traitors, after all, must be punished.

But the Yavar are attacking from every front—tracking down Kunal and Reha in the remote mountains, kidnapping Harun—in search of legendary artifacts that will give them the power to break the precarious janma bond and release the destructive magic back into the lands.

Now that the race is on to find the missing artifacts, Esha must put aside her rage and work with Kunal again—but can she find the strength to forgive him, or will the Viper have her revenge at any cost?

In the final book of Swati Teerdhala's epic fantasy trilogy, the lands' fate, their people's livelihoods, and the bond that sustains their world all depend on what Kunal and Esha can offer—to the gods and to each other.

My Review
:
These were such great reads! I loved the first book, and it was really great to be back in this world with these characters! I loved all the politics and the developments, as they searched for the Princess Reha, to take down the wrongful king!

The Archer at Dawn, oh, were there a lot of moving parts. To go to the palace of the pretender King, to have to spend time with him, and deal with all the politics, that was a pretty high stress situation. And quiet a few emotional outbursts were had, which were delightful to read! Plus the competition that Kunal ends up entering, and the blackmail he has to deal with!

Honestly, I don't get why they were so bad about Kunal's decision to go with Reha. As he points out several times-he didn't know about Prince Harun, and Reha didn't give him much time to make a choice-or to even leave a note. I kinda think that they were overreacting. It's not like he betrayed them. Glad that things worked out in the end!

I loved the adventure that they had, dealing with the damaged janma bond, while dealing with enemies from multiple fronts. It's high stakes, and after everything that they've been through, there's a lot of emotions for Kunal and Esha to deal with. I loved how everything worked out, for them and for their counties!

These were really wonderful books, and I can't wait to see what Swati Teerdhala writes next!
