Week 49 Reviews: Edgedancer, Oathbringer

From Goodreads:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, a special gift edition of Edgedancer, a short novel of the Stormlight Archive (previously published in Arcanum Unbounded).

Three years ago, Lift asked a goddess to stop her from growing older--a wish she believed was granted. Now, in Edgedancer, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant finds that time stands still for no one. Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can't help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility.

The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Words of Radiance, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game.

In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.

My Review:
Well, it was so fantastic to continue this series! I loved getting to know Lift better, and watching the continuing adventures of the Knights Radiant, and it was just so epic to read! So my secrets, so many reveals, and amazing character moments!

I really enjoyed reading Edgedancer! We did have bits and pieces of Lift's story in Words of Radiance, but I loved getting this story, because in the notes from Arcanum Unbounded, Brandon Sanderson mentions that he had several goals with this book, developing Lift's character, and dealing with Darkness who had a role in Oathbringer. And it was so fantastic!

A lot of these characters were dealing with things. Like Shallan was dealing with her past, the memories that she'd been suppressing. Kaladin, spending time with the "parshemen" and learning more about them that had him thinking about his world! Such great character building!

Oathbringer was Dalinar's book. We finally got some answers to questions about him, like what happened to his wife. And that was just heartbreaking and astounding, it went much further than I could've even thought! I just loved learning about his past! As well as dealing with building up the Knights Radiant, and all the politics. It was so strange having the contrast of him 20-30 years ago, when he was deep in the thrill, the Blackthorn, whereas now, he's more mature, he's moving way from violence-but nobody really wants to work with him.

I just really enjoyed those final chapters! Things have been really dark in this series, but we had this happy note! And I was so excited to see Dalinar start to write, to start to move past the societal conventions that have kept them down. It was just a really great moment to read!

Loved reading these books, and I can't wait to read Dawnshard and Rhythm of War!
