Week 13 Review: Last Guard

From Goodreads:
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to a world devastated by change in her award-winning Psy-Changeling Trinity series, where two people defined by their aloneness hold the fate of the Psy in their hands…

Termed merciless by some, and a robotic sociopath by others, Payal Rao is the perfect Psy: cardinal telekinetic, CEO of a major conglomerate, beautiful—and emotionless.

For Canto Mercant, family and loyalty are everything. A cardinal telepath deemed "imperfect" by his race due to a spinal injury, Canto cares for the opinions of very few—and ruthlessly protects those he claims as his own. Head of intel of the influential Mercant family, he prefers to remain a shadow in the Net, unknown and unseen. But Canto is also an Anchor, part of a secretive designation whose task it is to stabilize the PsyNet. Now that critical psychic network is dying, threatening to collapse and kill the entire Psy race with it.

To save those he loves, Canto needs the help of a woman bound to him by a dark past neither has been able to forget. A woman who is the most powerful Anchor of them all: Payal Rao. Neither is ready for the violent inferno about to ignite in the PsyNet…or the passionate madness that threatens to destroy them both.

My Review:
I loved reading this book! I've loved this series from the beginning, and I loved getting to know Canto and Payal! And oh, were there some really epic developments in this world, that I can't wait to see how things play out!

Honestly, this world and these characters have been though the wringer! That the two of them met at a school for Psy who were defective, and mind you, this was at least 20 years ago, before the start of the series, before the fall of Silence. And that school was not kind to them.

They bonded, but he got taken out of the school and raised by the Mercants, while she was put back with her family, and had to pretend, and half of her family are pretty darned awful! So that was an interesting mix. Especially given that she saved him, and he's been looking for her ever since.

I had a great time with the politics of her job, of the perception that people had of her, of the persona she had to put on. As well as the fact that they're both Anchors, which is a vital designation that the PsyNet needs. But I loved watching the Anchors come together, and step up for their designation! Can't wait to see how the series plotline develops with this added piece! I just love how it's growing!

This was another amazing read, and I can't wait for the next book in this series!
